Chloe held up the torn paper. “Then explain this.” Luna’s face went pale. For the first time since Chloe had known her… Luna looked genuinely scared. “Where did you get that?” “Right here on the roof.” Silence stretched between them. Wind howled across the building. Finally, Luna whispered, “You shouldn’t have found that.” Chloe’s voice hardened. “You and Tristan wrote this.” Luna shook her head violently. “It’s not what you think.” “Then tell me what it is.” Luna hesitated. Her eyes darted toward the stairwell door like she expected someone to appear. “I can’t.” “Why not?” “Because—” Her phone buzzed. Luna froze. Slowly, she pulled it out. Chloe watched her expression collapse as she read the message. “What is it?” Chloe asked. Luna’s hands began trembling. “They know.” “Who knows?” Luna looked up at her. Tears filled her eyes. “We were never really cheating.” Chloe blinked. “What?” “It was a setup.” The words came out in a rush. “A year ago, Zoe found out something she wasn’t supposed to.” “What?” Luna shook her head. “I don’t know exactly. But it involved someone powerful.” Chloe’s mind raced. “And you and Tristan?” “We were there that night,” Luna admitted hoarsely. “But we didn’t push her.” “Then what happened?” Before Luna could answer— The rooftop door burst open. Both girls turned. Tristan stood in the doorway. His chest heaved like he’d run the entire way there. “Luna,” he said urgently. “You shouldn’t be here.” His eyes landed on Chloe. Then on the torn paper in her hand. The color drained from his face. “Oh God.” “You signed this,” Chloe said. Tristan ran a hand through his hair. “It’s not what you think.” “Then start explaining.” A slow clap echoed behind them. All three of them turned. A man stepped onto the rooftop. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Wearing a black hoodie pulled low over his face. “Well,” the man said. “This is disappointing.” His voice was low. Dangerous. Luna gasped. “You weren’t supposed to come here,” she whispered. The man laughed. “And let you spill everything?” He reached into his pocket. When his hand came back out— He held a knife. Chloe’s blood ran cold. “You’ve all forgotten the rules,” the man continued calmly. “Silence keeps you alive.” Tristan stepped in front of Chloe instinctively. “Leave her out of this.” The man tilted his head. “Oh?” His gaze settled on Chloe. “Too late.” He took a step forward. “You’ve been digging where you shouldn’t.” Chloe’s pulse thundered in her ears. “What did Zoe find out?” she demanded. The man’s smile was visible even beneath the shadow of his hood. “That’s not important anymore.” Another step. “The important thing… is that loose ends need to be tied.” Luna grabbed Chloe’s arm. “We need to run.” But the man moved faster. The knife flashed under the rooftop lights. Before anyone could react— Another figure tackled the man from the side. They crashed into the concrete. The knife clattered across the roof. Chloe spun around. Jasper Voss stood between them and the attacker. His breathing was steady. Controlled. “You picked the wrong night,” Jasper said coldly. The man struggled under his grip. “Who the hell are you?” Jasper reached down and ripped the hood off. The man’s face was unfamiliar to Chloe. But Luna gasped in recognition. “You…” Jasper didn’t look surprised. Instead, his eyes burned with something far darker. Years of anger. Years of grief. “You killed my sister.” The words hit like a gunshot. Chloe froze. “Sister?” The man sneered. “That girl should’ve kept her mouth shut.” Jasper’s fist slammed into his jaw. “Her name was Zoe Collins.” The rooftop fell silent. Chloe’s heart pounded violently. Jasper turned to face them. And for the first time since she met him… She saw the truth behind his calm, mysterious exterior. “My real name,” he said quietly, “is Jasper Collins.” Luna’s breath caught. Tristan looked like he might collapse. Jasper’s voice dropped to a deadly whisper. “And I’ve spent the last year pretending to be someone else… just to find out who murdered my sister.”
