The police sirens didn’t come that night.
Not yet.
Everything had happened too fast, too violently, and too privately for anyone outside Luna’s living room to understand the storm that had just erupted.
The man on the floor groaned, struggling weakly as Jasper tightened the zip tie around his wrists.
Chloe’s heart was still racing.
Glass crunched beneath her shoes as she stepped closer, staring down at the man who had threatened them minutes earlier.
This was the person who had controlled Tristan and Luna for a year.
The person who had been connected to Zoe’s death.
“Don’t move,” Jasper said coldly, pressing the man against the floor with one knee.
The man laughed hoarsely.
“You think this is over?” he muttered.
Jasper didn’t respond.
Instead, he pulled out his phone and dialed a number.
“Hello,” he said calmly when the call connected. “Yes. I need officers at Westview High. I’m bringing someone in connected to the Zoe Collins case.”
Chloe’s pulse spiked.
The Zoe Collins case.
Just hearing those words spoken out loud made the entire situation feel real.
Tristan ran a shaky hand through his hair.
“We should go to the school,” he said hoarsely.
Jasper looked up sharply.
“Why?”
“Because he’s not the only one involved.”
The words settled heavily in the room.
Chloe felt a chill crawl down her spine.
“What do you mean?” she asked.
The man on the floor smirked faintly.
“Looks like your boyfriend finally found his backbone.”
Tristan ignored him.
He looked directly at Chloe.
“You deserve the truth.”
Her stomach twisted.
“Then start talking.”
Tristan swallowed hard.
“This guy didn’t act alone.”
“Who else?” Chloe demanded.
“The principal.”
The room went dead silent.
Luna’s eyes widened.
“You’re serious?” she whispered.
Tristan nodded slowly.
“He’s the principal’s cousin. That’s how he got access to the school accounts.”
Chloe’s mind spun.
The pieces began sliding into place.
“The money,” she said slowly.
“The illegal money Zoe discovered.”
Tristan nodded again.
“Millions of dollars were being moved through school funds and private donations. Zoe found the records by accident while helping the office with paperwork.”
Jasper’s expression darkened.
“And when she threatened to expose it?”
“They panicked,” Tristan said.
“They forced Luna and me to lure her to the roof.”
Chloe’s chest tightened.
“Did you push her?”
The question came out quieter than she expected.
Tristan’s face went pale.
“No.”
Luna shook her head immediately, tears forming again.
“We swear we didn’t.”
Tristan continued, his voice shaking slightly.
“We were arguing with her. Trying to convince her not to go to the police.”
“What happened then?” Chloe asked.
Before Tristan could answer, the man on the floor chuckled.
“You want to know what happened?”
His eyes gleamed with something cruel.
“She slipped.”
Chloe’s breath caught.
“What?”
“She was backing away from us,” the man continued lazily.
“Arguing, threatening to ruin everything.”
Jasper’s fists tightened.
“Then she hit the loose gravel near the edge.”
His smile widened.
“And down she went.”
Silence filled the room.
The air felt suffocating.
“You’re lying,” Jasper said quietly.
The man shrugged.
“Believe what you want.”
Jasper stared at him for a long moment.
Then he stood.
“We’re taking him to the school.”
Chloe blinked.
“Why the school?”
“Because,” Jasper replied, “that’s where the rest of the truth is.”
—
Westview High looked eerie at night.
The campus lights cast long shadows across the empty walkways as Chloe, Tristan, Luna, and Jasper entered the administration building.
The man they had captured walked between them, his wrists still bound.
He looked almost amused.
“Walking into the lion’s den,” he said.
Tristan ignored him.
The hallway felt colder than usual.
Chloe’s footsteps echoed as they approached the principal’s office.
Light glowed beneath the door.
He was still there.
Jasper knocked once.
Then pushed the door open.
Principal Harrington looked up from his desk, surprised.
“What is this?” he demanded.
His eyes moved across the group.
Then landed on the man standing between them.
The color drained from his face.
“Daniel?” he said sharply.
The man grinned.
“Hey, cousin.”
The room fell silent.
Chloe felt her heart pounding again.
Jasper stepped forward.
“We know everything.”
Principal Harrington stood slowly.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”
Tristan stepped beside Jasper.
“Zoe Collins discovered the money transfers.”
The principal’s jaw tightened.
“You’re accusing me of embezzlement?”
“Not accusing,” Jasper said calmly.
“Proving.”
He pulled a flash drive from his pocket.
“What’s that?” the principal asked.
“Security footage.”
Jasper placed it on the desk.
“Recorded the night Zoe died.”
The principal’s eyes flickered.
For a moment, his composure cracked.
“There are no cameras on that building,” he said quickly.
“Not official ones,” Jasper replied.
“But I installed one after my sister died.”
The word sister echoed through the room.
Principal Harrington’s gaze snapped toward him.
“You’re—”
“Zoe Collins’ brother.”
Silence slammed into the office.
The principal’s shoulders sagged slightly.
But before he could speak, another voice interrupted.
“You’re not the only one with evidence.”
Everyone turned.
A woman stood in the doorway.
Her eyes were red from crying.
Zoe’s mother.
She stepped into the office slowly.
In her hands was a worn leather notebook.
“Zoe kept a journal,” she said softly.
“She wrote down everything she discovered.”
She placed it gently on the desk.
The principal stared at it like it was a loaded weapon.
Jasper opened the notebook.
Pages filled with Zoe’s handwriting revealed dates, bank account numbers, and detailed notes about suspicious financial activity.
Every entry pointed to the same names.
Principal Harrington.
Daniel Hargrove.
The evidence was overwhelming.
The principal sank into his chair.
“You don’t understand,” he said weakly.
“We were going to fix it.”
“By killing my sister?” Jasper snapped.
“I didn’t push her!” the principal shouted.
The room went silent again.
Chloe felt a strange wave of relief.
Because that meant what Tristan and Luna said might actually be true.
Zoe’s death had been a tragic accident.
But everything leading up to it—
The blackmail.
The threats.
The cover-up—
Those had been real.
Police sirens wailed faintly in the distance.
Someone had called them.
The end was coming.
Tristan exhaled shakily.
“It’s finally over.”
But Chloe wasn’t so sure.
Because as Jasper flipped to the final page of Zoe’s journal, his expression suddenly changed.
His eyes narrowed.
“What?” Chloe asked.
He turned the notebook toward her.
At the bottom of the page, beneath Zoe’s last entry, another line had been written.
In different handwriting.
The message was simple.
“There was someone else involved.”
Chloe felt her stomach drop.
The final sentence chilled her even more.
“They’re closer than you think.”
Slowly, Chloe lifted her head.
Her gaze swept across the room.
Tristan.
Luna.
Principal Harrington.
Daniel Hargrove.
Zoe’s mother.
And Jasper.
Because suddenly… she wasn’t sure who the message was about.
Jasper closed the journal slowly.
But Chloe noticed something.
For the briefest moment—
His expression had changed.
Not shock.
Not confusion.
Something else.
Something darker.
Like he already knew exactly what the final message meant.
And he wasn’t ready to say it out loud.
