The brass wedge stopped short of Leah Mercer's shoes and waited like a dare. BALANCE REQUIRES AN INSIDE TOUCH. The white thread quivered above it. The ivory tab stayed flat against the hall-side jamb. The empty ring held outside the threshold. The black ribbon crossed beneath the thread, running back to Olivia's chair, the cashbox brake, and Martha's trapped bell. Martha saw the word touch and turned to the maid. "One finger," she said. "You need not understand anything. Steady the wedge for the house." The maid's hand lifted before her courage could catch it. Olivia rolled the chair hard enough for the brake to bite. The velvet strap snapped tight across the cart line, and the maid's hand stopped in midair. "No," Olivia said. "Her finger is not your inside touch." Martha did not look angry. She looked patient, which was worse. "Then yours, Olivia. You are inside this room. You have been moving that chair as if it speaks." Olivia's knuckles whitened on the wheel. "My chair blocks you. It does not answer for Leah." Ethan took half a step away from the threshold before Martha could ask him. She smiled at that, too. "And Mr. Hunt retreats because he knows what balance means." Ethan put his hands behind his back. "I won't touch it. I won't name it. I won't make her choice look like my correction." Isabella had not moved. That was the hardest part. Every instinct wanted to kick the wedge back into the hall. But a kick was still an inside touch. A flinch was still something Martha could spend. She lowered the closed cashbox receipt until its folded edge rested on the floor between the wedge and her shoe. Not touching the wedge. Blocking the path to her. Then she set the copper brake tag on the receipt. "Inside touch is unavailable from Leah Mercer," Isabella said. "Unavailable from Olivia's chair. Unavailable from Mr. Hunt. Unavailable from staff fear." Martha's gloved hand drifted toward the black ribbon. Richard saw it. His face tightened before his voice came. "Martha is reaching for the ribbon." "Visible facts only," Isabella said. "The wedge is under the door," Richard said. "The thread is above it. Isabella's receipt is inside the room but not touching the wedge. Martha's hand is moving toward the ribbon." Martha made a wounded sound for the staff. "After all this," she said, "you will call a grandmother's hand coercion?" Miss Vale answered before Richard could fail again. "If it rings that bell, yes." The room went still. Martha's hand snapped down. She caught the black ribbon and pulled, not toward the wedge, but toward the bell knot, trying to make the touch travel through the room as if the house itself had steadied the brass. Isabella was already moving. She slid the receipt sideways with the copper tag on top. The folded paper caught the white thread and lifted it just enough for the black ribbon to tighten underneath. Martha's pull struck the trapped bell before it could travel to the wedge. The bell sounded once, strangled and bright. The wedge did not move. The maid flinched, but this time she did not raise her hand. Mrs. Pike stepped beside her. Olivia's chair stayed locked. Ethan looked at Isabella, then deliberately looked away from the wedge, giving her refusal room to stand without his knowledge beside it. "Record the consequence," Isabella said. "The only inside touch attempted came from Mrs. Thorne's pull on the coercion ribbon. It touched the bell before it touched the balance. It is pressure, not consent." Martha's face hardened. "Pressure is how old houses stay standing." "No," Isabella said. "Pressure is how they hide what they broke." She took one step back, leaving the receipt and copper tag in place. It was a small retreat, but it made the shape clear: Leah Mercer was not the inside touch. Olivia was not the inside touch. Ethan was not the inside touch. Staff fear had not been allowed to volunteer. Richard looked from the wedge to Martha's hand. "I witness the pull. I don't witness consent." The brass wedge tilted. Not inward. Outward. Something heavy beyond the door shifted with a dull scrape, and the white thread rose a fraction from its dangerous sag. The ivory tab stayed where it was, high on the hall-side jamb. A thin line of light opened under the wedge. INSIDE TOUCH REJECTED FROM LEAH. STAFF TOUCH BLOCKED. HUNT TOUCH ABSENT. COERCION TOUCH ATTACHED TO BELL. BALANCE HOLDS OUTSIDE. The light vanished. Martha stared at the wedge as if it had betrayed blood. Then the upper hinge of the south hall door gave a small metallic click. The white thread jumped once, and a new hairline of shadow appeared above the hinge, not below it, pulling every eye up from the wedge to the part of the wall no one had touched.
