📖 They Buried the Wrong Heiress
Chapter 102: The Left-Clavicle Condition - Consequence
Twenty-nine seconds did not sound like time until the panel began taking it away.
The first tick made the witness flinch. The second made Martha's silence behind the door feel chosen. By the third, Olivia had stopped looking at the amber prompt and started looking at Richard.
"If I answer origin," she said, "I am not opening the condition."
"No," Richard said at once. His hands were open at his sides, as if the room had finally taught him what not to touch. "You are answering when the conflict category came from. Not what it contains."
Martha struck the door again. "She is a frightened girl being coached by enemies."
Olivia's mouth tightened, but her finger did not move.
A heel scraped on the hall marble, close enough to the threshold that Alvarez's head turned.
Isabella stepped close enough for Olivia to hear her without giving the room another authority to record. "This is the fork. If you do nothing, Martha's office gets to call the contradiction a family classification. If you choose only the date-origin category, it stays outside her ownership."
The witness made a breathless sound that was almost no and almost hope. "Outside?"
"Outside the house's story," Isabella said.
The panel counted down from twenty-two.
Ethan glanced to Alvarez, waited for the nod, then spoke without touching the console. "Visible behavior only. The hall-side request is still active. It is trying to wait you out."
Martha laughed through the wood. "Listen to him. A Hunt man teaching a Thorne woman how to betray her father."
Olivia's face went white at the word father. For one second Isabella saw the old Olivia, trained to mistake cruelty for inheritance. Then Olivia reached over and put two fingers on the silver bell sitting on the evidence cloth.
She did not ring it. She turned it upside down.
"My father is not a category," Olivia said. "And neither is her body."
The witness covered her mouth.
Richard closed his eyes once, hard.
Olivia pressed the key marked for safe selection. "Authorize date origin category only. No condition detail. No medical content. No image, file body, recording, transcript, witness private record, or family record. Keep Richard's objection attached to sequence only."
The panel chimed, lower than before.
DATE ORIGIN CATEGORY: POST-LOCK HOUSEHOLD PROXY ENTRY.
MEDICAL CONTENT: SEALED.
CONDITION BODY: SEALED.
HOUSEHOLD PROXY DEFAULT CLASSIFICATION: BLOCKED BY SUBJECT DATE-ORIGIN SELECTION.
Martha's breath hit the other side of the door like a slap she had meant for someone else.
Olivia did not smile. That made the blow cleaner.
"Plain English," she said to Isabella.
Isabella kept her voice steady for the witness, for Richard, and for the part of herself that still remembered people deciding what her body proved without asking her. "The contradiction was entered after the lock and from the household side. Martha cannot call it family memory, family grief, or family privacy to control it. It becomes a disputed route fact."
Richard looked at the amber line that had been waiting to become his excuse. "Attach my objection. I object to the sequence that let the house classify a contradiction after the old lock. I do not claim authority over what is sealed."
Olivia selected the attachment prompt.
PRIOR CHAIN LOCK DISPUTE ATTACHMENT: POSTED.
ATTACHMENT SCOPE: DATE ORIGIN CATEGORY / SEQUENCE OBJECTION / EXTERIOR CONTRADICTION ONLY.
HOUSEHOLD PROXY CLASSIFICATION REQUEST: PRESERVED AS FAILED DEFAULT ATTEMPT.
The witness's knees softened. Alvarez moved before she fell, not taking her arm until she nodded. When she did, he guided her one step farther from the door.
Martha saw it through whatever narrow sightline the hall still gave her.
"You think this saves her?" she said. "You have only proved she was placed."
The panel answered first.
HALL-SIDE STATEMENT CAPTURED AS ROUTE-PLACEMENT CLAIM.
Ethan's expression sharpened, but he waited.
Alvarez read the line once, then looked at Olivia. "Visible route fact available. No content."
Olivia's fingers hovered over the console. The bell lay upside down between her and Martha's closed door, its mouth finally unable to summon anyone.
"Route-placement claim," Isabella said softly. "She just tried to make the witness into luggage."
The witness lifted her head.
Olivia chose preserve.
ROUTE-PLACEMENT CLAIM: PRESERVED.
RELATED SAFE OBJECT DETECTED: PRIOR VOICEMAIL.
AVAILABLE EXTERIOR FACTS ONLY: ROUTE LABEL / PRESERVATION STATUS / DATE RELATION.
A new timer appeared beneath it, green this time, colder than the amber had been.
PRIOR VOICEMAIL HOLD EXPIRES IN 00:45 UNLESS SUBJECT SELECTS SAFE EXTERIOR REVIEW.
Behind the door, Martha stopped breathing loudly enough for everyone to hear.
