Martha's sentence about the dead did not close the door. It opened the wrong one. Richard made a sound low in his throat, and Isabella saw the old family reflex rise in him: grief first, obedience second, silence after. Martha had trained the room to bow whenever she wrapped a command in mourning. Olivia did not bow. "Safe exterior consequence facts only," she said. Her hand was flat on the edge of the evidence table, not shaking now. "Sponsor route timing against the prior chain lock, current external hold attachment, whether the objection can hold without medical content, and whether Household Proxy sponsorship blocks or marks external review authority. Do not open medical content. Do not open Voss death-supporting material body. Do not open reports, images, playback, witness private records, contact identity, counsel body, archive body, filing body, packet body, memory, donor media, Blue Room material, typed fields, signature pages, employment, immigration, housing, or family records." Alvarez repeated every exclusion for the record. From the hall, Martha said, "You cannot understand what you refuse to read." Olivia turned toward the closed door then, not enough to give Martha the room, only enough to give the record her answer. "I understand who keeps asking me to read it." The panel chimed. SPONSOR-TIME CONSEQUENCE: EXTERIOR REVIEW ONLY. SPONSOR ROUTE TIMING: PREDATES PRIOR VOSS DEATH-SUPPORTING CHAIN LOCK. For one heartbeat, no one moved. Then Richard stepped back as if the words had crossed the room and put a hand on his chest. "Before the lock," he said. Ethan waited until Alvarez's nod came. "Visible wording means the Household Proxy path was positioned before the old chain was sealed. Not after tonight. Not because Olivia objected." Isabella felt the reward land sharp and terrible. Martha had not built this as an emergency response to a difficult granddaughter. The hallway had been waiting before the family story became untouchable. The witness whispered, "So the house was already standing beside the death file." Martha struck the door once. Alvarez's officers moved, and the sound died against their bodies before it could become a command. Olivia lifted her chin. "Current external hold attachment." CURRENT EXTERNAL HOLD ATTACHMENT: AVAILABLE ONLY AS DISPUTED ROUTE MARK. EXTERNAL REVIEW AUTHORITY SUPPORT: NOT CLEAN WHILE HOUSEHOLD PROXY SPONSORSHIP REMAINS UNRESOLVED. Richard's eyes closed. Isabella did not let him sink into remorse. "Plain meaning," she said. "Martha cannot use tonight's outside hold to wash an old household-sponsored death route clean. If it attaches, it attaches with the stain showing." Olivia's mouth tightened, but this time it was not pain. It was control. "Then mark it," she said. "Attach it only as disputed. Preserve that the sponsor path predates the chain lock. Preserve that external review is not clean while Household Proxy is inside the route." The panel pulsed amber instead of green. OBJECTION DEPENDENCY CHECK: PRESENT FAMILY WITNESS OBJECTION RECORDED. MEDICAL CONTENT REQUIRED TO HOLD OBJECTION: NO. Richard opened his eyes. The room saw him understand before he spoke. Martha had no need to be in the room if shame could do the work for her. She only needed Richard to believe that objecting required him to look at the dead. He moved one step nearer to Olivia, again leaving space, again making the choice visible. "My objection holds without opening their bodies, their reports, or anything sealed for grief," he said. His voice broke on grief, but it did not break the sentence. "Record that." The panel flashed white. OBJECTION HOLD: PRESERVED WITHOUT MEDICAL CONTENT. HOUSEHOLD PROXY SPONSORSHIP: BLOCKS CLEAN EXTERNAL REVIEW CLAIM; ROUTE MAY PROCEED ONLY AS DISPUTED EXTERIOR FACT. The witness began to cry quietly. Not from fear this time. From the small, stunned relief of seeing one of Martha's sacred words fail to protect her machinery. Martha's voice thinned through the door. "Richard, you are letting a stranger rewrite your dead." Isabella looked at Olivia, waiting. Olivia did not answer for her. She did not use Isabella's pain as proof. She chose the record instead. "Related safe object or next route pressure," Olivia said. The panel went still long enough for the room to hear the mansion's vents breathe. RELATED EXTERIOR PRESSURE DETECTED: PRIOR CHAIN LOCK. AVAILABLE SAFE FACTS: LOCK CATEGORY, LOCK DATE RELATION, EXAMINER FILE NUMBER PRESENCE. EXAMINER FILE NUMBER BODY: SEALED. Richard read the last line twice. His face changed on the second reading. "There is a file number," he said. Ethan's gaze sharpened, but he stayed silent until Alvarez permitted it. "Only the presence is visible," Ethan said. "Not the file." Isabella felt the next pressure settle into place, colder than grief and harder to dodge. Martha had told them some doors should stay closed for the dead. The house had just admitted one of those doors had a number.
