📖 They Buried the Wrong Heiress
Chapter 81: The Counsel Notice - Pressure
Martha's warning had not finished cooling in the air before the panel answered it.
COUNSEL NOTICE waited on the screen like a sealed door with a lawyer standing behind it.
Olivia kept both hands visible at her sides. "Exterior facts only. Recipient category, trigger event, notice time, sender category, route relationship, privilege label category, and whether it came before or after I blocked the Proxy Seal assignment."
Martha's head turned slowly. "You do not get to interrogate counsel."
"I am not opening counsel," Olivia said. "I am asking what made counsel move."
That difference hit the room hard enough to make the vestibule feed crackle with the witness's breath.
Alvarez looked from Olivia to the panel. "No body text. No legal advice. No filing content. Source and timing only."
The panel pulsed blue.
SAFE EXTERIOR NOTICE FACTS AVAILABLE.
RECIPIENT CATEGORY: FAMILY COUNSEL INTAKE.
TRIGGER EVENT: PROXY SEAL ASSIGNMENT BLOCKED.
NOTICE TIME: TWENTY-ONE SECONDS AFTER BLOCK.
SOURCE CATEGORY: HOUSEHOLD PROXY OFFICE ROUTE.
PRIVILEGE LABEL CATEGORY: COUNSEL REVIEW HOLD.
ROUTE RELATIONSHIP: DISPUTED HOUSEHOLD AUTHORITY PRESSURE TO FAMILY COUNSEL INTAKE.
Olivia read the lines once. Her face did not change, but Isabella saw the small break in her breathing.
"Twenty-one seconds," Richard said.
Martha snapped, "A proper household system notifies counsel when a reckless daughter tampers with family authority."
The word daughter landed where Martha aimed it. Olivia flinched. Then she reached for the evidence cloth, not the screen, and placed one fingertip beside the silver bell instead of on it.
"You called it family authority when the seal tried to make a prepared route look like a witness's answer," Olivia said. "Now counsel moves because I stopped that from happening."
Martha's eyes sharpened. "Be careful. Privilege exists to protect you."
Isabella stepped forward just enough for Olivia to hear her without surrendering the room. "Privilege can protect legal advice. It cannot erase the time stamp that proves the advice was waiting for the seal to fail."
Ethan's gaze moved over the panel. He did not touch anything.
Alvarez caught the restraint. "Visible behavior only."
"The notice did not trigger when the witness cried," Ethan said. "Not when the bell link preserved. Not when the fob receipt posted. It triggered after Olivia blocked assignment."
Richard looked at Martha with a sick, dawning precision. "Counsel was not protecting Olivia from confusion. Counsel was waiting for the family story to need repair."
The vestibule witness made a sound too small to be a sob and too frightened to be silence.
Martha lifted one hand toward the camera. "Do not answer legal questions."
"She won't," Olivia said. "She will answer route questions if she chooses."
The witness breathed in through the feed. "Mrs. Thorne said counsel would handle it if the seal route was challenged."
Martha went still.
Olivia did not. "What did she tell you to do?"
"Say I was there to support the household record," the witness whispered. "And not to argue about legal words."
"No protected content," Alvarez warned.
"I do not know protected content." The witness's voice shook harder. "I only know she said if Miss Olivia fought the seal, counsel would already know where to put it."
For one second, the old house seemed to show its bones: bells, fobs, sealed envelopes, witness routes, counsel notices, all built to make Olivia's refusal look like the problem instead of the proof.
Martha found her voice again. "This is exactly why counsel must review the matter. She is confused, coached, terrified."
"Yes," Olivia said, and the word cut clean. "She is terrified because you brought her here to hold a prepared answer and then told her counsel would contain the consequence."
She turned to the panel. "Preserve the trigger-event timing. Preserve source category and route relationship. Keep the notice body closed. Separate counsel exterior facts from privileged content."
The panel took the command.
TRIGGER-EVENT TIMING PRESERVED.
SOURCE CATEGORY PRESERVED.
ROUTE RELATIONSHIP PRESERVED.
COUNSEL NOTICE BODY: CLOSED.
PRIVILEGED CONTENT: NOT ACCESSED.
Martha's mouth tightened until all softness left it. "You have just made yourself the subject of counsel review."
Olivia's hand stayed beside the bell. "No. I made the timing a witness."
Richard bowed his head once, not in apology, but in recognition of a fact he could no longer set down.
Isabella watched Olivia hold the room with nothing but a boundary and a time stamp, and felt the shape of Martha's power narrow by one more locked door.
Then the panel gave a low tone.
COUNSEL NOTICE EXTERIOR PRESERVED.
ASSIGNMENT STATUS: HELD.
NEXT SAFE FACT REQUIRED BEFORE DISPUTE ROUTE CAN POST: COUNSEL INTAKE ROUTE RECEIPT OR RECIPIENT ACKNOWLEDGMENT CATEGORY.
On the vestibule feed, the witness whispered, "She told me not to be there when counsel acknowledged it."
Olivia looked up.
"Then we find out who was supposed to be there instead."
