📖 They Buried the Wrong Heiress
Chapter 73: The May Third Image - Pressure
The words May Third Image landed harder than a photograph should have.
No one in the room had seen it. That was the danger. Martha's house had spent the night proving that a sealed thing could still accuse someone if the label around it was dirty enough.
Olivia stared at the panel. "What exclusion decision?"
Martha answered too quickly. "None. If an image exists, it should route cleanly."
Isabella watched Olivia's shoulders tighten at the word cleanly.
Alvarez spoke toward the radio. "Visible safe label only. No image content. No description."
The vestibule witness took longer this time. Paper shifted. Breath caught. "It says source side requests exclusion option before label route. Safe categories available: image date tag, exterior source category, route-linked annotation."
"Route-linked annotation," Richard repeated.
Ethan did not move until Alvarez looked at him.
"Fact-limited," Alvarez said.
"A label can tell the outside system how to read the image before anyone sees it," Ethan said. "If the house controls the annotation, the image may arrive with Martha's story attached."
Martha's chin lifted. "Or with necessary context."
"Context written before the route?" Richard asked.
Martha gave him a look sharp enough to cut family silver. "You are learning suspicion very late."
"No," Olivia said. "He is learning timing."
The sentence changed the room. Not loudly. It simply took Martha's old privilege of naming what everyone else was doing and put it on the evidence cloth beside the bell and the fob.
Isabella felt the old pull to step in, to push, to protect the narrow win. She kept her hands still.
Olivia looked at the panel. "Can the image label route without the annotation?"
The witness read after another tremble of paper. "Safe answer says yes, if subject selects exterior-label only and excludes route-linked annotation from source side."
Martha laughed under her breath. "There. She will hide the context and then call the picture evidence."
"I am not routing the picture," Olivia said. "I am routing the outside of the box it is in."
Martha turned to Alvarez. "Do you hear her? She wants to curate what the record receives."
Olivia's finger hovered above the panel again. This time it did not shake. "I want the record to know who tried to curate it first."
The panel chimed.
MAY THIRD IMAGE SAFE LABEL PENDING.
SOURCE CATEGORY: HOUSEHOLD PROXY IMAGE HOLD.
DATE TAG CATEGORY: MAY THIRD.
ROUTE-LINKED ANNOTATION: SOURCE SIDE REQUESTED.
The room seemed to shrink around the date.
Richard swallowed. "May third."
Martha did not look at him. That was answer enough.
Isabella kept her voice low. "Olivia, the question is not what is in the image. Not yet. The question is whether Martha's side gets to send a caption with it before anyone outside sees the label. If that note routes first, any reviewer meets Martha's excuse before they meet the evidence."
"A caption can be a lie in a prettier dress," Olivia said.
For the first time since the image label appeared, her face steadied. The win was not seeing the picture. The win was forcing Martha's story to stand outside it, tagged as a story instead of hidden inside the evidence.
The vestibule witness made a small, involuntary sound.
Olivia heard it. "What did she tell you to call the annotation?"
Silence snapped across the radio.
Martha's palm slapped the chair back, the wood thudding like a gavel. "Do not answer that."
The witness's voice thinned. "She said if they asked, I should call it a welfare context note."
Richard closed his eyes.
The panel answered before anyone else could.
WELFARE CONTEXT NOTE DETECTED AS ROUTE-LINKED ANNOTATION.
EXCLUSION DECISION STILL REQUIRED.
Olivia did not touch the panel.
"Exterior label only," she said. "Exclude the welfare context note from the route. Preserve that it was requested. Do not open the image."
The panel accepted the first two words and refused the rest with a hard red pulse.
Martha smiled again, but it no longer fit her face.
The witness read the new strip. "It says exterior-label route requires one more safe fact before exclusion can post."
Alvarez's voice sharpened. "Which fact?"
The witness answered in a whisper. "Whether the May Third date tag was created before or after Olivia's refusal status posted."
