The witness had not finished the sentence before Martha moved. Not much. One polished step toward the radio, one hand lifting as if she meant to calm everyone. But Isabella knew that kind of calm. It was how a woman with keys to every locked room asked the house to swallow a person whole. "No one is defining anything," Martha said. "Olivia has declined to sign. A neutral witness may record that." The vestibule witness gave a small, frightened laugh. "Neutral?" Martha's eyes sharpened. "Careful." Olivia did not look away from the frozen panel. "Read only the label. Not the page. Not the packet. Just the witness rule." Alvarez nodded once toward the radio. "Safe visible label only." Paper scraped in the vestibule. The witness sounded as if she were holding the strip with both hands to keep it from shaking. "It says, 'Refusal status witness eligible.' Then under it, 'temporary household witness preassigned.'" Richard's face changed. It was not apology yet. It was recognition arriving late and finding no chair. "Preassigned," he said. "A staffing convenience," Martha snapped. "Before Olivia refused?" Richard asked. Martha turned on him with the full force of family history. "Do not help strangers make your daughter look unwell." The word daughter should have softened him. Instead, it made him flinch. Isabella kept herself still. This had to be Olivia's line, not hers. But Olivia's eyes cut to her, asking for plain language without surrendering the choice. "If they witness only that you refused," Isabella said quietly, "Martha can say you refused to cooperate. If they witness what you refused, they may imply you saw a page you never opened. Either way, they try to turn a boundary into evidence against you." Olivia's mouth tightened. "Then I authorize the status without the story." Martha laughed once. "That is not how adult legal refusal works." "This is not legal refusal," Olivia said. Her voice did not rise. That made it worse for Martha. "Preserve those four facts." Ethan's fingers flexed once at his side. He did not speak until Alvarez looked at him. "Fact-limited," Alvarez said. "The receipt is still held," Ethan said. "Preservation of those facts may not release the route unless a refusal-status choice is selected." "In English," Olivia said, and for the first time there was bite in it. Isabella felt something in her chest answer. Ethan accepted the correction. "The system wants a label for your refusal before it sends the conflict outside." "Then it can have a label I write," Olivia said. "Not one Martha brought with a witness." Martha's composure broke enough for color to rise above her collar. "You are making yourself impossible to protect." "No," Richard said. Everyone looked at him. He stared at the radio as if the woman in the vestibule had become a mirror. "A witness printed before she arrived cannot neutrally witness what she chooses now." The vestibule witness made a sound that might have been relief. Then another strip tore loose with a dry little snap. "There is a new option," she whispered. Martha's hand closed around the back of a chair. Alvarez leaned toward the radio. "Read the visible option label only." "It says, 'Subject-authored refusal status may be externally preserved if limited to sealed-material boundary.'" Olivia shut her eyes for half a second. When she opened them, she was not calmer. She was more present. "My refusal status is this," she said. "I refuse to sign or acknowledge sealed material. I do not refuse to preserve visible evidence. I do not refuse to cooperate with external review. I refuse Martha Thorne's preassigned witness." The panel took the words. SUBJECT-AUTHORED REFUSAL STATUS CAPTURED.
