📖 They Buried the Wrong Heiress
Chapter 69: The Clip Window - Pressure
The frozen seven seconds made the room quieter than the timer ever had.
00:07 stayed on the panel, bright enough to throw a thin blue line across Olivia's wrist. Her fingers were still near the evidence cloth, inches from Martha's silver bell, but she did not touch it. She looked through the open radio toward the South Service Vestibule.
"Do not read the condition," Olivia said. "Do not open the clip. I authorize visible facts only."
Martha's laugh was nearly kind. "You cannot keep refusing the thing that proves whether the witness is reliable."
Olivia turned. "I can refuse a trap."
The witness breathed once, hard, as if the word had given her permission to stay scared and honest at the same time.
Alvarez stepped closer to the panel. "Scope it."
Olivia's voice held. "Window source category. Whether there is a witness-match field. Preservation route only. No packet body. No Backup Letter. No filing. No medical material. No memory playback. No Blue Room contents. No signature-page body."
The panel pulsed.
CLIP WINDOW REVIEW: SAFE VISIBLE FACTS AVAILABLE.
Martha's eyes moved to the radio. "Miss Bell, listen to me. A match does not mean blame. It means consistency. If the printed condition says you were present to confirm family protection, then say you were present to confirm family protection."
"That is not what she said," Richard said.
The shock of his interruption hit Martha harder than anger would have. She looked at him as if he had stepped across a line painted before his birth.
Richard did not retreat. "You are asking her to change her statement while the timer is frozen."
Isabella saw Olivia hear it. Not as comfort. As proof that someone else finally understood the shape of the second attempt.
Ethan kept his hands visible at his sides. "The screen is not asking whether Miss Bell is reliable. It is asking whether the live statement can be forced to resemble a prewritten condition."
"Fact-limited," Alvarez warned.
"That is the fact," Ethan said, and stopped there.
Olivia nodded once. "Proceed."
The guard in the vestibule read slowly. "Window source category is Household Proxy Office conflict follow-up. Witness-match field exists. It is not complete. Preservation route says internal hold unless subject authorizes external conflict preservation."
Martha's expression cleared, because she had found the door. "Internal hold is appropriate. This is a family procedural conflict."
"Internal means your house keeps it," Olivia said.
"Internal means protected," Martha replied.
Isabella felt the old power of that word. Protected had been the velvet cloth over every blade in this family. Protected from scandal. Protected from panic. Protected from truth until the truth belonged to Martha.
She made herself speak plainly. "If it stays internal, the same office that printed the condition gets to hold the proof that the witness did not match it."
The witness made a soft, sick sound. "The line under it changed."
Alvarez lifted his hand. "Visible words only. No content."
"It says mismatch," the witness whispered. "It says mismatch may restart the paused review if not cured before expiry."
Olivia's face went white, then hard.
Martha leaned toward the radio, every inch of her polished into authority. "Miss Bell, cure it. Say the condition is correct. Say you understood your role."
"She means change your answer until it fits the printed version," Isabella said.
"No contact," Alvarez said.
"I am not contacting. I am instructing a household witness not to ruin herself."
"You are trying to make her save your process," Richard said.
Martha turned on him. "You have no idea what is at stake."
"I do now."
The words did not absolve him. Isabella saw that in Olivia's eyes. But they landed anyway, a small public fracture in the wall Martha had used as family.
Olivia touched the edge of the evidence cloth. Not the bell. The cloth.
"Miss Bell," she said, "I am authorizing external conflict preservation of the visible clip-window facts only. You do not have to cure anything. You only have to keep your statement yours."
The witness let out a breath that broke in the middle. "If I do not match it, the screen says the pause can expire."
"Then we preserve that warning too," Olivia said. "Visible warning label only."
The panel chimed before Alvarez could repeat the scope.
EXTERNAL CONFLICT PRESERVATION REQUESTED BY LIVE SUBJECT.
WITNESS-MATCH FIELD: MISMATCH UNRESOLVED.
PRESERVATION ROUTE SELECTION REQUIRED BEFORE PAUSE EXPIRY.
The frozen timer flickered.
00:07.
00:06.
Martha smiled for the first time since the witness had said no.
"Choose carefully, Olivia," she said. "External preservation sends your distress outside this house."
Olivia did not look away from the timer.
"No," she said. "It sends yours."
