Ninety seconds did not sound like enough time to ruin a life. Then the number changed to eighty-nine, and Olivia understood that Martha had never needed much longer. The woman waiting at the South Service Vestibule was still outside. The badge was still half printed. The bell was still trapped on the evidence cloth where Martha could see it and not use it. Martha recovered first. "Cancel it." Olivia looked at her. "If you are truly the subject file holder," Martha said, each word polished into concern, "then behave like one. Cancel the print before a stranger is dragged into your private medical history." Isabella felt the hook in it. Privacy. Shame. Protection. Martha could make a weapon sound like a blanket. Olivia's mouth opened, but no sound came. Richard stepped forward. "Mother, who is she?" "A household compliance witness." "For deletion?" Martha's eyes sharpened. "For closing a procedural error before this circus destroys what is left of your daughter." Olivia flinched at daughter. Isabella saw it and wanted to cut the word out of the air. Instead she looked at the panel. Eighty-one seconds. "Olivia," Isabella said, "you do not have to cancel. You also do not have to open anything. Ask what gets erased." Martha turned on her. "You are coaching her into self-exposure." "I am narrowing the question." Alvarez spoke into the space before Martha could fill it. "Limited request available. What would deletion erase? No folder content. No memory playback. No witness interview unless Ms. Thorne authorizes." Olivia's hands were shaking. She curled them into fists until the tremor belonged to her. "Show what deletion would erase." The panel blinked once. Martha said, "That request is beyond her capacity." Nora's voice went cold. "Capacity was challenged and refused earlier tonight. Current subject-file authority is active. Continue." Ethan did not smile. He did not move. Isabella appreciated both. The wall panel answered. DELETION TARGET: UNISSUED BADGE PRINT LOG. INCLUDES: SOURCE TERMINAL SNAPSHOT, REQUEST TIME, WITNESS ARRIVAL MATCH. Olivia's face changed. Not relief. Not horror. Recognition. "Arrival match," she whispered. Ethan waited for Alvarez's nod. "Visible fact only. If the log is erased, they lose the system link between the badge request and the person at the vestibule." "Plain English," Richard said, voice rough. Isabella answered before Ethan had to. "Martha can say the woman just came by. The log can say the house called her." The countdown dropped to sixty-seven. The radio crackled. "Detective, vestibule subject is requesting entry or release. She says the print log must be cleared before she signs." Martha closed her eyes for half a second. It was enough. Richard saw it too. "Before she signs what?" "Enough," Martha said. The word did not command the room the way it once had. Olivia stepped closer to the panel. "Can I freeze the log without taking the badge?" Martha's composure split. "You ungrateful child." Olivia's shoulders jerked, but she did not step back. Isabella kept her gaze on Olivia, not Martha. "Same boundary. Freeze the log. Do not accept the badge. Do not open the folder." Nora repeated it for the recorder. Alvarez repeated it for the officer. The panel chimed. SUBJECT FILE HOLDER MAY FREEZE LOG. FREEZE TRIGGERS EXTERNAL PRESERVATION NOTICE. The countdown dropped to fifty-two. Martha laughed, but there was panic in it now. "External? You will send family material to a court server because a machine taught you a new word?" Olivia looked at the half-printed badge. "No," she said. "Because you called a witness to erase a log about me." For one suspended second, Martha looked old. Then she reached into her jacket. Alvarez moved fast. "Hands visible." Martha's fingers stopped around the edge of a small black fob. Not a phone. Not a key. Something flatter, with a red household crest on its face. The wall panel changed before Martha could speak. HOUSEHOLD PROXY OVERRIDE DETECTED. DELETE REQUEST MAY BE CONFIRMED BY MASTER FOB IN 10 SECONDS. Olivia's breath broke. At the vestibule end of the radio, the guard said, "Detective, the woman has begun counting down with the panel." Martha held the fob in the open, smiling again. "Freeze it, Olivia," Richard said, and the plea in his voice was too late and finally honest. The panel waited, the number ten burning beside Martha's raised fob as Olivia's last safe second began.
