Alvarez moved before Martha's thumb reached her screen. "Phone on the table," he said. Martha stopped with the device half lifted, elegant enough to make the motion look like offense instead of panic. "Detective, my house console is refreshing. I am allowed to call staff." "Not while the same console is active inside a disputed estate channel." Alvarez did not raise his voice. That made the command worse. "Set it down." For one second the room waited to see whether Martha Thorne would obey a police instruction in her own study. Then Olivia's camera caught the slight tremor in Martha's wrist, and Martha placed the phone beside the tablet as if she had chosen it. The board preview refreshed again. East sitting-room console active. Key present. Leah made a small sound by the door. Martha turned on it instantly. "There," she said. "That is what I warned all of you about. Archive assistants have keys for routine preservation. Leah, tell them how often you refresh old packet links." Leah's mouth opened, but no answer came out. Her badge cord was twisted around two fingers until the plastic edge bit her skin. Isabella stepped between Leah and the tablet's line of sight. "She doesn't answer you." "She is my employee." "She is your witness now." Isabella looked at Alvarez. "If the key is present, preserve the key path before anyone here makes her confess to a script." Nora's voice came through Richard's speaker, clipped and fast. "Say that again for the record. Preserve key path, session origin, user label, local-room identifier, and any attempted revocation tied to ERV-19." Richard repeated it, each word costing him more color. "Preserve key path. Session origin. User label. Local-room identifier. Any attempted revocation tied to ERV-19." The tablet flickered as if someone in the east sitting room had heard him. Martha smiled with her lips only. "You cannot preserve what you do not control." Ethan's hands stayed flat on the table. He did not look at Isabella until Alvarez said, "Visible fact only. Can the screen show whether this is auto-refresh or keyed access?" "Sometimes," Ethan said. "If the panel exposes the audit strip." "Then read only the strip." Ethan leaned close enough for the blue light to sharpen his face. "Key present is not auto-refresh. It means a credential token is seated or mirrored. There should be a key ID." "Do not help her build a new accusation," Martha snapped. Olivia's laugh was thin and ugly. "That's rich, coming from the woman who built one out of my signature." Martha's gaze cut to her. "Olivia, every second you record this, you attach yourself to her scandal." "No," Olivia said, and her voice steadied on the second word. "I attach you to mine." The tablet added a line. Key ID: MT-EAST-2. Leah shook her head before anyone asked. "I don't have that key." "Quiet," Martha said. Isabella did not let Leah become the center. "Who does?" Richard's hand went to the edge of the desk. The old authority of the room seemed to move through him and fail. "Martha's east sitting room has two console keys. One is in the wall drawer. One was issued to her private aide account after the gala archive renovation." "No staff key?" Alvarez asked. "Not MT-EAST-2," Richard said. Martha's composure cracked just enough for Isabella to see the person underneath it calculating a new route. "Private aide accounts are maintained by vendor support. The house is full of remote service tools because Richard lets lawyers turn family grief into an exhibit." The board preview answered before Richard could. Remote aide session linked: donor media revision, Olivia Thorne authorization file. Olivia lowered the phone an inch. The victory on her face looked like pain. "That is the same path," she said. "The same path that changed my video transcript." Martha reached for her phone again. Alvarez's hand landed over it first. The tablet chimed, and the gray ERV-19 line began to fade. Cross-reference access revocation pending. Confirm from MT-EAST-2? Isabella felt the trap try to close: touch the panel and authenticate it, or watch another dead woman's name vanish. She lifted both hands where Alvarez's camera could see them. "I do not confirm," she said. "I demand preservation."
