📖 They Buried the Wrong Heiress
Chapter 41: The Estate Counsel
The new name sat in the Board Emergency Channel like a person who had entered the study without opening a door: Elaine Voss Estate Counsel. Olivia did not lower her phone. Isabella did not reach for hers. Even Martha, who had spent the last hour making silence look like ownership, let one second pass too long before she smiled.
"There," Martha said. "The Voss side has joined the record."
"No one has verified who joined anything," Alvarez said.
His voice changed the room. The two Thorne security men by the hall stopped looking at Martha and looked at him instead. Nora's voice came through Ethan's phone, clipped and awake. "Do not close the preview. Richard, state the channel status. Ethan, hands visible."
Ethan put both hands flat on the side table before anyone accused him of needing the instruction. "Visible." Richard's thumb hovered above the tablet. "Board Emergency Channel preview remains live. Viewer list shows Pemberton Advisory, Olivia Thorne, Ethan Hunt proxy prompt expired, and Elaine Voss Estate Counsel. No direct message window open."
"Open viewer details without messaging," Nora said.
Martha laughed once, soft enough to be polite. "You are all behaving as if counsel for a dead woman's estate can be trespassing in a channel concerning that dead woman's name."
Olivia stepped toward the center of the study. The donor-video timer had vanished, but the damage it tried to do had not. Her face was still pale, her mouth still too steady. "Do not use me to make that sound reasonable."
Martha turned on her. "Olivia."
"No." Olivia did not raise her voice. That made it worse for Martha. "My donor video was not trust consent. My silence was not approval. And Elaine Voss's estate appearing now does not repair what you tried to attach to my name."
Isabella felt the impulse to thank her, and buried it. Gratitude would pull Olivia into Isabella's side before Olivia had chosen where to stand. She kept her own hands on the table for Alvarez's camera. "Olivia's statement should stay first in the chain," Isabella said. "She disputed the authorization file before this viewer appeared. That matters." Olivia glanced at her. Not forgiveness. Not alliance. But she did not look away.
Richard tapped viewer details. The channel opened a narrow card. Entity: Elaine Voss Estate. Counsel of Record: Mallory Keene, Keene & Sato LLP. Trigger: Dormant Estate Seal Request. Source: Pemberton Advisory Archive.
Leah, still near the door, whispered, "Keene & Sato is real."
"Real firms can receive false packets," Alvarez said. "Richard, scroll."
Martha's smile returned in a sharper shape. "Or real firms can respond when a claimant drags a dead woman's name into a board channel. Isabella wanted the Voss estate involved. Now it is involved."
"I wanted my mother's name not used as a forged witness line," Isabella said.
"Careful," Martha said. "If estate counsel asks for proof, you will have to provide it in front of the same board you wanted to impress."
The viewer card expanded. Required estate verification: Elaine Rose Voss death certificate hash. Estate seal pending release. Counsel requests live claimant standing before archived witness package opens. The words hit harder than shouting. Richard's breath came out rough. Ethan looked at Isabella, then looked down again because looking too long could become another accusation. Olivia's hand tightened around her phone.
"Death certificate hash?" Olivia asked.
Nora answered before Martha could. "A unique verification string tied to the death certificate on file. If Pemberton controls the archive source, they may be trying to force Isabella to authenticate the estate through their file."
"Which would mean using their copy of my mother's death to prove they lied about her," Isabella said.
Martha spread both hands, all injured elegance. "If you are truly Elaine's daughter, why fear estate counsel?"
Alvarez looked at Isabella. "Do not answer that as a challenge. Answer only if you choose to place a statement in the preservation record."
For a moment Isabella saw the trap's shape. If she refused, Martha would call it fear. If she answered through Pemberton's archive, the source path could swallow her mother's death into the same machine that had forged her. Olivia stood three feet away, still carrying the bruise of a stolen consent. Isabella would not build her claim by repeating the theft.
"Record this," Isabella said. "I do not authorize Pemberton Advisory Archive to authenticate my mother's death certificate. I do not authorize a forged Elaine Voss witness line to open under estate seal. I will provide estate standing through independent counsel, under ADA Alvarez's preservation protocol, after Olivia Thorne's donor-video dispute is preserved as first violation in this sequence."
Olivia's eyes lowered once. It was the smallest nod a woman could give while refusing to owe it. The tablet chimed. New private instruction detected to Elaine Voss Estate Counsel. Sender: A.W. Pemberton.
Martha's smile disappeared. Richard read the preview line before anyone could stop him. "Do not accept claimant hash. Await sealed Voss death packet from Thorne House vault."
