📖 They Buried the Wrong Heiress
Chapter 39: The Approval Trap
Ethan did not reach for the screen. The approval prompt sat under Richard's thumb like a loaded weapon, pale blue against the trustee app's black glass. Approver required: ETHAN HUNT. Below it, a smaller timer had started counting down from ten minutes.
Martha saw the timer before anyone else spoke. Her face repaired itself with frightening speed. "There. The system is not mine, then. If Ethan is the approver, he knew a claim challenge existed."
"Or your system is trying to make him carry it," Olivia said.
Martha turned on her. "You should be asking why your fiance's name is on a discredit brief about Isabella Voss."
Olivia flinched at fiance, but she did not retreat. She crossed to Richard's side and looked at the prompt until her own humiliation had somewhere to go. "I am asking why my signature was forged and his approval is being demanded in the same room, by the same channel, after you told everyone my consent already existed."
Alvarez lifted one hand. "Nobody approves, refuses, or exits the prompt until I understand what happens when the timer reaches zero." Nora's voice came through Ethan's phone, sharp and low. "Ethan, do not touch your own device. If you know the portal's behavior, explain it verbally."
Ethan kept both hands open at his sides. Leah watched the effort it cost him. He looked less like a powerful man than a man standing under a sign someone else had nailed above his head.
"Approval prompts in this module can be configured three ways," Ethan said. "Active approval, denial approval, or silent nonresponse routing. If it is the third, refusing to touch it may still send the package as unopposed."
"Convenient," Martha said. "Now silence helps you too."
Isabella felt the old instinct rise: force him to answer, make his name burn, turn Martha's trap back through him. She swallowed it. Revenge that used the wrong hand became Martha's language.
"Then we preserve the configuration before the timer ends," Isabella said. "Not his choice. The trap." Ethan looked at her then. Not grateful. Gratitude would have made it smaller. He looked as if she had pulled him back from the edge of becoming evidence against her.
Richard shifted the phone toward Alvarez. "There is an information icon beside the timer."
"Do not tap until I say," Alvarez said. "Nora?"
"Screen record is active on my end from Ethan's camera," Nora said. "Alvarez, have Richard state the command before each touch." Richard's voice cracked only once. "I am tapping the information icon beside the approval timer. I am not approving, denying, or opening the brief."
He tapped. The panel opened without fanfare. Leah leaned close enough to see the smaller lines stack beneath the timer: nonresponse escalated as provisional approval, the source was a Hunt Capital proxy credential, and the Board Emergency Channel preview had already opened.
Olivia made a sound that was almost a laugh and almost not. "So if he does nothing, you get his name."
Martha's eyes flicked, just once, toward the sitting-room door. Alvarez caught it. "Who has the preview open?" Another line loaded as if the app resented being asked: Active viewer, Board Member A. W. Pemberton.
Richard went still. "Arthur Pemberton is not on the current board."
Martha's composure did not crack this time. It sharpened. "He is counsel to a trust committee."
"Not this trust," Richard said. Talia, still behind Leah, whispered, "Mrs. Thorne said Mr. Pemberton would make it official if Ethan delayed."
Martha's head turned with terrible softness. "Talia."
Olivia stepped between them before Leah could. "No. You do not get to use her fear, my forged name, and Ethan's silence, then call it governance."
Ethan's phone vibrated on the table. No one touched it. The screen lit with a new notification from an unknown number. Nora read it aloud from the camera feed. "Approve now or claimant fraud packet proceeds under Hunt proxy authority."
Alvarez's expression changed. "That is witness intimidation and evidence tampering in real time."
Martha gave a small, brittle smile. "From an unknown number."
Isabella looked at the timer. Six minutes, thirteen seconds.
"Then we make it known," she said. "Alvarez, preserve the text. Richard, preserve the viewer. Nora, amend the filing. Ethan does not approve anything."
Ethan's voice came quietly. "If nonresponse routes as approval, doing nothing is still a signature."
"Then you will not do nothing," Olivia said. She picked up her own phone, held it where Alvarez could see, and began recording herself. "My name was used without consent. Ethan Hunt's name is being used without a free choice. Any packet sent under either name is disputed before transmission."
For the first time since the prompt appeared, Martha looked genuinely afraid. The app refreshed, and a second line appeared beneath Ethan's trapped approval: Second approver activated: OLIVIA THORNE AUTHORIZATION FILE. Under it, a new timer began at three minutes.
