"I have a question," Richard Thorne said. The ballroom became obediently silent. Men like Richard were allowed questions even when they had spent twenty years avoiding answers. Olivia clutched her speech cards. "Daddy?" Leah watched from the service door, half hidden behind Ethan and Megan. On the dais, Martha's smile remained in place, but the rest of her face did not move. Richard looked at his mother. "What is the legacy birth-correction program?" A murmur crossed the room. Martha rose slowly. "This is neither the time nor the language for technical grant matters." "Then say no," Richard replied. His voice shook. "Say it has nothing to do with Isabella." Olivia turned toward Martha, confused for the first time that night. Sebastian moved from the side wall, already calculating damage. "Richard, perhaps we should step outside." "No." Catherine stood beside her husband. She looked terrified, but she stood. "Ask her here." Martha's gaze cut to Catherine. Leah had imagined this moment for two years, but not like this. Not Catherine finally finding a spine. Not Richard bleeding shame into a microphone. Not Olivia realizing the script had pages she had never seen. Ethan leaned close. "This will not expose her. It will make her retreat." "Retreat is movement," Leah whispered. Martha touched Richard's arm. "My son is grieving." Richard pulled away. The room gasped softly. It was the first public disobedience of his life. "The Halcyon partnership is suspended pending legal review," he said. Olivia's face drained. Sebastian stepped toward the stage. Martha turned to the room with a wounded smile. "Of course. Transparency has always been the Thorne way." Liar, Leah thought. Applause began uncertainly, then grew because rich people clapped whenever they did not know what else to do. The announcement was dead. For now. In the pantry, Megan exhaled. "We did it." Ethan shook his head. "You delayed it." Leah's phone buzzed. Unknown: Leave now. Martha just ordered the clerk killed. Leah showed Ethan. He read the message and went still. "The St. Mercy clerk," Leah said. Ethan was already moving. "Where is she?" "Basement records." "Not anymore." His voice had changed, the softer one surfacing through panic. "If Martha sent Costa's men, they will take her to the old maternity wing." Leah grabbed his sleeve. "How do you know that?" Ethan looked at her, and for a second the man in front of her was not the cold banker from the papers. He was a frightened boy remembering smoke. "Because that is where they took Elena before the crash."
