Leah closed the folder with one hand and slid the infant bracelet beneath her sleeve with the other. Sebastian saw the movement. His smile thinned. "Search her," he told security. The clerk stepped in front of the box. "These are protected medical archives." "And you are committing a felony by releasing them." "Then call the police." Sebastian laughed softly. "My dear, I called them before I came down." Leah heard the trap snap shut. If police found her with stolen medical files, Leah Mercer would be arrested. If her prints matched anything from Isabella's old life, Martha would know the grave was empty. If she ran, Sebastian would destroy the box. She needed a third door. Ethan Hunt opened it. "Costa," he said from the corridor. "You are blocking access to records under federal preservation notice." Sebastian turned. "This does not concern you." "Halcyon concerns me. St. Mercy concerns me. Forged birth corrections concern anyone with prosecutors on speed dial." One security officer hesitated. Sebastian noticed. "Mr. Hunt is not law enforcement." "No," Ethan said. "I am worse. I am the man who owns your bridge loan." The room changed temperature. Leah watched Sebastian calculate. Debt had a language richer men respected faster than truth. Ethan stepped inside and placed a document on the counter. "As of nine this morning, Costa Strategic Partners is in technical default. Until cured, any act by your officers to destroy related evidence constitutes impairment of collateral." "You cannot be serious." "I am rarely amusing." Police sirens sounded above them. Sebastian's eyes moved from Ethan to Leah. Recognition had not arrived, but suspicion had. "You picked an interesting waitress." Ethan did not look at her. "I pick useful people." The words hurt more than they should have. The clerk shoved the box toward Ethan. "Take it under notice. All of it." Leah backed toward the hall. Sebastian reached for her arm. Ethan caught his wrist. For one second, Ethan's face went blank. Then his voice changed again, quiet and almost gentle. "Do not touch her." Sebastian froze. Leah froze too. Ethan blinked, and the gentleness vanished. He released Sebastian as if the contact bored him. "Leah," he said coldly, "walk." She walked. At the stairwell, she looked back. Sebastian stood in the doorway, no longer smiling. He knew she mattered now. And in her sleeve, against her skin, the infant bracelet warmed with the name Isabella Rose Voss.
