The panel did not show the number. That was the first mercy. It showed the shape around it: a sealed place in the old Voss chain where a file number existed, where a lock had been placed, where the house had learned to make absence look official. Richard stared at the sealed line as if it had reached through twenty years and put a hand around his throat. Martha's voice slipped through the door before he could speak.
