The panel did not show the number. That was the first mercy. It showed the shape around it: a sealed place in the old Voss chain where a file number existed, where a lock had been placed, where the house had learned to make absence look official. Richard stared at the sealed line as if it had reached through twenty years and put a hand around his throat. Martha's voice slipped through the door before he could speak. "Do not turn a lock into a wound." Olivia's fingers tightened once on the evidence table. Isabella watched the old trap assemble itself in the air: if Olivia asked too little, Martha kept the lock clean; if Olivia asked too much, Martha would accuse her of violating the dead. Olivia chose the narrow blade between them. "Safe exterior facts only," she said. "Prior Chain Lock category, lock date relation, examiner file number presence, sponsor-route timing relation, disputed-mark availability, and whether Richard's existing objection can attach without opening death-supporting content. Do not open the file number body. Do not open medical content, Voss death-supporting material body, report body, autopsy detail, images, playback, witness private records, contact identity, counsel body, archive body, filing body, packet body, letter body, memory, donor media, Blue Room material, typed fields, signature pages, employment, immigration, housing, or family records." Alvarez repeated the boundary, then looked to the hallway. "No commentary through the door." Martha laughed once. "How efficient. You can condemn a family without reading a thing." Isabella stepped closer to Olivia, not in front of her. "Plain risk," Isabella said. "If the lock sits after the Household Proxy route, Martha can say the house merely followed an official closure. If the route sits before the lock, the house helped build the closure." The witness pressed her palms together. The panel chimed. PRIOR CHAIN LOCK: EXTERIOR REVIEW ONLY. LOCK CATEGORY: VOSS DEATH-SUPPORTING CHAIN ACCESS LOCK. EXAMINER FILE NUMBER PRESENCE: CONFIRMED; BODY SEALED. Richard shut his eyes at the word confirmed. Olivia did not let the room fall into the file. "Date relation." LOCK DATE RELATION: AFTER HOUSEHOLD PROXY SPONSOR ROUTE POSITIONING. The sentence landed harder than any image could have. For a second, the only sound was the hallway vent breathing over Martha's silence. Ethan waited for Alvarez's nod. "Visible wording supports sequence only. Household Proxy sponsor route was positioned first. The chain lock came after." The witness whispered, "So it wasn't just a door they found closed." Richard opened his eyes. "They helped close it," he said. The panel flashed white. PRESENT FAMILY WITNESS INTERPRETATION: RECORDED AS EXTERIOR SEQUENCE RESPONSE. Martha struck the door hard enough that the glass shade beside it trembled. "Richard," she said, and this time her voice had lost its velvet, "you do not know what you are saying." He turned toward the door, pale but upright. "Then you should have told me before the house did." The witness made a small broken sound that might have been a laugh if the room were kinder. Olivia's eyes stayed on the panel. "Can the lock be marked disputed under the current external hold without opening the body?" DISPUTED MARK AVAILABILITY: AVAILABLE. DISPUTED MARK LIMITATION: MAY NOT ALTER FILE NUMBER BODY; MAY ATTACH TO LOCK CATEGORY AND DATE RELATION ONLY. Isabella felt the reader reward in the clean shape of it. Martha's sacred lock would not open, but it would no longer stand untouched. "That is enough," Olivia said. "Mark the lock category and date relation disputed. Do not alter the file number body. Do not open it." The panel pulsed amber. OBJECTION ATTACHMENT CHECK: PRESENT FAMILY WITNESS OBJECTION CAN ATTACH TO LOCK CATEGORY AND DATE RELATION. MEDICAL OR DEATH-SUPPORTING CONTENT REQUIRED: NO. Richard breathed in as if the room had given him back a little air. "Attach it," he said. "My objection is to the sequence. Not to the dead. Not to their sealed content." Olivia looked at him then, measuring whether his words belonged to guilt or choice. He held her gaze. "I let Martha call locks protection for too long," he said. "Record that I object to this one being called neutral." The panel accepted the sentence with a cold chime. Then the amber deepened. PRIOR CHAIN LOCK PRESSURE: ACTIVE. ADDITIONAL SAFE FACT REQUIRED BEFORE DISPUTED MARK CAN POST: LOCK AUTHORITY SOURCE CATEGORY. Martha went silent on the other side of the door. The silence told Isabella exactly whose category the house was about to name.
