📖 They Buried the Wrong Heiress
Chapter 93: After Martha Left - Pressure
The amber warning did not fade after Martha left.
It held on the panel like a hand still pressing the doorframe, and the room changed around it. The witness stopped crying. Richard stopped breathing loudly. Even the gold-cufflinked counsel man in the vestibule seemed to understand that Martha had not retreated. She had only moved her body out of reach.
Olivia looked at the door, then deliberately looked away from it.
"Safe exterior facts only," she said. "Post-exit trigger category. Room route. Active listener link category. Whether the doorframe contact changed listener routing. Whether any Household Proxy route remains active after Martha's removal. Whether the protected route listener receipt was affected. Nothing else opens."
Alvarez repeated the boundary for the record.
The panel answered with a soft chime.
POST-EXIT TRIGGER CATEGORY: ROOM CONDITION HANDOFF.
ROOM ROUTE: IMMEDIATE EVIDENCE AREA TO SOUTH HALL THRESHOLD.
ACTIVE LISTENER LINK CATEGORY: HOUSEHOLD PROXY HOLDOVER LINK.
Richard's face went slack.
"Holdover?" he said.
Isabella kept her voice low, because the plain meaning was worse than the words. "It means she did not need to stay in the room if the room still listened for her after she walked out."
The witness made a sound and clutched the sleeve of Alvarez's officer. "I thought she was gone."
"She was removed from the area," Olivia said. Her hand hovered above the table, not touching the evidence cloth, not reaching for comfort. "Now we find out what she left behind."
From the hall came the small, unmistakable click of a door closing somewhere beyond the threshold.
Martha's voice did not follow it. That was what made the click dangerous.
Ethan glanced at Alvarez before speaking. "Visible behavior only?"
Alvarez nodded once.
"The protected listener receipt still shows posted," Ethan said. "But the panel is asking whether a house route can attach to the room condition after the posting."
Olivia caught the important part. "Attach, not replace?"
"Visible wording supports attach."
Martha had built a way to stand behind a closed door and still lean on the room.
Richard turned toward the threshold. For once he looked less angry than ashamed. "She touched that frame every time she left a room angry."
Isabella looked at him. "And no one asked why."
He swallowed. "No."
The panel pulsed amber again.
PROTECTED ROUTE LISTENER RECEIPT: POSTED.
RECEIPT STATUS: NOT REVOKED.
HOUSEHOLD PROXY HOLDOVER LINK: ACTIVE UNTIL SUBJECT CHOOSES ROUTE RESPONSE.
POST-EXIT OBJECTION WINDOW: OPEN.
TIMER: 00:25.
The witness whispered, "She gets to object after being removed?"
"No," Olivia said, and the word landed harder because she did not shout. "The house is trying to object for her."
That was the reward Isabella had been waiting for: Olivia no longer asking what Martha meant, no longer defending why she deserved to decide. She saw the mechanism and named the theft before anyone could dress it as care.
The gold-cufflinked man took a cautious step back from the vestibule line.
Alvarez pointed at him. "Stay visible."
"I am not part of that route," counsel said quickly.
The panel chimed.
FAMILY COUNSEL PRESENCE: NOT CURRENT ACTIVE LINK.
Richard's mouth tightened. "So it is not counsel."
Olivia looked at him. "It is her house pretending she never left."
She turned back to the panel before Martha's absence could become a ghost story. "Safe fact only. Can I preserve the receipt and isolate the holdover link without opening playback, witness content, contact identity, medical material, counsel body, archive content, filing content, packet content, image, crop, typed field, letter, signature page, Blue Room material, donor media, or memory?"
The answer did not come immediately.
The timer dropped to 00:18.
00:17.
The door beyond the threshold clicked again, softer this time, as if someone had tested the latch from the other side.
The witness flinched.
Richard stepped between the threshold and Olivia before he seemed to realize he had moved.
Martha's absence finally cost him something visible.
The panel flashed white over amber.
SUBJECT MAY PRESERVE PROTECTED ROUTE RECEIPT.
HOLDOVER LINK ISOLATION REQUIRES CONSEQUENCE SELECTION.
AVAILABLE SAFE OPTIONS: LOCK ROOM ROUTE, POST DELAYED OBJECTION, OR REQUEST EXTERNAL HOLD OFFICER CONFIRMATION.
TIMER: 00:12.
Olivia did not choose fast.
She looked at Isabella first, not for permission, but because they both knew the wrong choice would either trap the room or give Martha twelve seconds to speak through it.
Then the panel added one more line.
DOORFRAME CONTACT SOURCE OBJECT REMAINS ACTIVE.
