📖 They Buried the Wrong Heiress
Chapter 67: The Consent Substitute - Pressure
The words Consent Substitute Packet changed the air faster than any scream could have.
Olivia did not step back, but Isabella saw the impact hit her shoulders. A substitute meant someone had expected Olivia to be present and still unnecessary. Someone had prepared a way to make her refusal look like noise.
Martha recovered first. "That phrase can mean many things."
"Then we will read the outside," Olivia said.
"You will do no such thing."
The command snapped out of Martha before she could soften it. The witness heard it through the open radio and made a small sound that was not quite a sob.
Alvarez lifted one hand, stopping Ethan before he could even glance toward the panel. "Exterior or category facts only. No packet body. No signatures. No statements."
Olivia nodded once. "Exterior label. Source category. Intended consent role. Relationship to the transport slip. Nothing else."
Martha's mouth tightened. "Consent procedures exist because unstable people refuse help."
Richard's face changed. It was not anger first. It was recognition, slow and sick. "You used her welfare label, and now you have a packet ready to explain why her yes was not needed."
"I used every lawful protection available to this family," Martha said.
Olivia looked at her. "I am standing here."
The panel pulsed.
CONSENT SUBSTITUTE PACKET: SAFE EXTERIOR FACTS AVAILABLE.
The vestibule guard read with care, as if each word might cut him. "Packet exterior is sealed. Gray band. Front label says Consent Substitute Packet. Source category: Household Proxy Office. Attached to transport slip by custody clip."
The witness whispered, her guilt making the words drag. "I clipped it because she told me to keep them together. She said if I separated them, I would be the one blamed for frightening Miss Olivia."
Martha turned toward the radio. "Do not editorialize."
"She is not editorializing," Isabella said. "She is explaining why the packet and the removal order traveled together."
Martha's eyes flashed. "You are not counsel."
"No," Isabella said. "I am the woman listening while you try to carry away the only person willing to say what was in her own hands."
For a second, the corridor belonged to that sentence. Ethan did not rescue it. Richard did not cover it. Olivia stood beside Isabella, not behind her.
Alvarez spoke into the radio. "Continue with exterior role only."
The guard swallowed audibly. "Intended consent role category: temporary household witness. Substitute condition category: subject present but welfare-distressed. Use condition: live objection unresolved."
Olivia's fingers curled against her palm.
Isabella forced the legal shape into plain words before Martha could wrap it in velvet. "If Olivia objected and the house claimed she was too distressed to mean it, a temporary witness could help replace her consent."
"That is a malicious simplification," Martha said.
"It is an accurate one," Ethan said, voice low, "based only on the visible categories."
Martha faced him with contempt. "You enjoy humiliating frightened women?"
Olivia laughed once, not because anything was funny. "You mean me, or the witness you tried to put in a car?"
The radio went silent.
Then the witness spoke.
"Mrs. Thorne told me if Miss Olivia cried, I should say she was overwhelmed and needed the family to decide."
Martha moved so quickly Alvarez shifted his stance between her and the radio. "That woman was hired for comfort support. She does not understand legal language."
The panel chimed again.
WITNESS VOLUNTARY STATEMENT DETECTED.
SAFE CONFLICT CHECK AVAILABLE: LIVE SUBJECT OBJECTION VS SUBSTITUTE CONDITION.
Olivia stared at the prompt. Her face had gone pale, but her voice came out clean.
"Check the conflict. Category only."
Alvarez gave the guard permission.
The panel answered before the guard could speak.
LIVE SUBJECT OBJECTION RECORDED.
SUBSTITUTE CONDITION STILL PENDING.
COUNTDOWN TO CONSENT SUBSTITUTION REVIEW: 00:45.
For the first time that night, Olivia looked less wounded than furious.
"It still runs after I objected?"
Isabella answered before Martha could. "Because your objection is now evidence against the preset process. It does not kill the process until someone forces the conflict onto the record."
In the vestibule, the witness said, "There's a second clip on the back, and it has my initials already printed beside the timer."
