📖 They Buried the Wrong Heiress
Chapter 60: The Deletion Challenge - Consequence
Olivia did not look at Martha's fob.
She looked at the word freeze.
It waited on the panel like a door only she could open, while the number beside Martha's raised hand dropped from ten to nine.
"Olivia," Martha said softly, and the softness was worse than the shout. "If you freeze it, you make your private condition a public weapon."
"Eight," the woman at the vestibule counted through the radio.
Richard's face twisted. "Mother, tell her to stop."
Martha did not.
Isabella stepped close enough for Olivia to hear her without making it a command. "Freezing the log does not open the file. It keeps proof that someone tried to erase how the witness got here."
"Seven," the radio said.
Olivia's hand rose, stopped halfway, and curled inward.
Martha tilted the fob toward the panel. "I will take the burden from you."
"No," Olivia said.
Her finger struck the panel.
FREEZE LOG.
For one breath, nothing happened. Then the badge printer screamed, a high mechanical whine that made everyone in the corridor flinch.
Martha pressed the fob.
The panel flashed red.
OVERRIDE DENIED.
SUBJECT FREEZE PRECEDENCE ACTIVE.
EXTERNAL PRESERVATION NOTICE SENT.
The radio went silent.
Then the guard at the South Service Vestibule said, "Detective, the woman just tried to leave."
Alvarez's eyes sharpened. "Hold her in the vestibule. No interior access. No release until I get there."
"She says she was only here for a rehearsal."
Olivia lowered her hand from the panel.
"A rehearsal?" Richard repeated.
Martha's smile came back in pieces. "There. You hear it. A rehearsal. Staff training. A compliance exercise that your frightened women have inflated into theater."
"What rehearsal?" Isabella asked.
Martha turned toward her with old contempt. "You are not family."
The words should have hurt. They did not land where Martha aimed them anymore.
Olivia answered instead. "Show what notice was sent."
Nora lifted a hand before Martha could protest. "Limited notice header only. No file content, no witness statement."
Alvarez approved it with one nod.
The panel changed from red to white.
EXTERNAL PRESERVATION NOTICE:
UNISSUED BADGE PRINT LOG FROZEN.
WITNESS ARRIVAL MATCH PRESERVED.
OVERRIDE ATTEMPT RECORDED.
Martha's fob gave a tiny, harmless click in her hand.
Ethan's gaze moved to it, then to Alvarez. He did not speak until she said, "Visible facts."
"The fob failed after Olivia froze the log," he said. "The system recorded that someone attempted an override after the subject-file holder acted."
"Someone?" Richard said.
The panel answered before Ethan could.
OVERRIDE DEVICE REGISTERED:
HOUSEHOLD PROXY MASTER FOB - MARTHA THORNE CUSTODY.
Richard made a sound Isabella had never heard from him before. Not grief. Not rage. Something stripped of all usefulness.
Martha stared at the panel as if it had betrayed her personally.
"You told me these systems protected the family," Richard said.
"They do," Martha said.
"From whom?"
For the first time, she had no sentence ready.
Olivia looked at the fob in Martha's hand. "Preserve it."
Martha's fingers closed.
Alvarez stepped in. "Mrs. Thorne, place the fob on the evidence cloth."
"This is privileged household property."
"It is a device registered to a failed deletion override in an active preservation event."
Plain English was no longer needed. Martha understood every word.
Slowly, she placed the fob beside the bell.
The bell, the badge, the phone, and now the fob sat together like a small museum of things that had once obeyed her.
The radio crackled again. The guard's voice lowered. "Detective, the vestibule witness is saying she will cooperate if the trustee rehearsal packet is not pinned on her."
Olivia's face lost color. "Trustee?"
Richard looked at Martha.
Martha looked at the fob, not at him.
The panel chimed one last time.
NEXT PRESERVATION OBJECT AVAILABLE: TRUSTEE REHEARSAL PACKET.
Below it appeared a single line that made Isabella's skin go cold.
REHEARSAL SUBJECT: OLIVIA THORNE CAPACITY TRANSFER.
