Olivia did not ask what subject verification meant. That frightened Isabella more than a question would have. Olivia stood under the wall camera, reading the new line as if the house had finally admitted it knew her by more than a patient number. Martha had looked away first. Now she looked back with a softer face, the one she had used at charity luncheons when a woman's grief became useful. "Olivia," Martha said, "step away from the panel." Olivia's shoulders rose. Isabella said nothing. She made herself wait. Nora's voice filled the gap. "Detective Alvarez, no one touches the screen. Ask the system for verification options only. No content. No playback." Alvarez repeated the instruction toward the lower officer. The radio hissed. Somewhere below them, by the vault threshold, the masked woman stayed silent. The wall panel shifted. Three small choices appeared, each plain enough to feel cruel. VERIFY FILE SUBJECT PRESENCE. VERIFY CREATOR CONTACT PATH. VERIFY CARE AUTHORITY OVERRIDE. Richard whispered, "Care authority." Martha moved fast. "That is exactly why this must stop. Those are medical terms." "They are choices," Olivia said. "They are bait." "Maybe." Olivia's fingers curled into her palms. "But they are bait you built." Martha's face tightened. Ethan looked to Alvarez. She nodded once. "Visible fact," he said carefully. "The first option can confirm Olivia is the file subject without opening memory. The second can show where Martha's proxy reaches next. The third may identify who can override Olivia's boundary." "May," Martha said. "Again." "That is why Olivia chooses," Isabella said. Martha turned on her. "You are coaching her toward self-harm." Olivia laughed once, no humor in it. "No. She is the only person in this room not trying to spend me." The words landed hard. Richard flinched. Martha did not, but her hand went again toward the silver bell and stopped when Alvarez's gaze moved with it. "I want Dr. Chen on the line," Martha said. "If Olivia continues, I want her treating physician present to certify capacity." "Is he her current treating physician?" Nora asked. Martha paused for a fraction too long. Alvarez caught it. "Mrs. Thorne." "He supervised her care after the accident." Olivia stared at her grandmother. "After the accident you said made me invent the blue room." "After the accident that nearly killed you." "Then why is he in the file path before I choose anything?" No one had seen that line yet. Olivia had. Isabella followed her gaze to the lower corner of the panel, where a small gray notice had appeared beneath the options. CAPACITY CONTACT STORED: MERCER CHEN, M.D. UPDATED BY HOUSEHOLD PROXY. Richard stepped back as though the words had physically reached him. "Mother." Martha lifted her chin. "A responsible household keeps emergency contacts." "Not inside a consent-memory lock," Ethan said, then stopped because Alvarez had not cleared him. Alvarez did not rebuke him. Her attention stayed on Olivia. "Ms. Thorne, you are not required to select anything." Olivia nodded. The nod was too quick. Isabella saw the old obedience pulling at her: prove you are sane, prove you are grateful, prove you are not the fragile thing they keep naming. Isabella let her voice stay low. "Refusal is also a record." Olivia turned her head just enough to meet her eyes. For a second, the room fell away from them. Not friendship. Not forgiveness. Something narrower and more costly: two women standing on opposite sides of harm Martha had arranged, recognizing the same locked door. Olivia looked back at the panel. "I refuse care authority override," she said. Martha inhaled. "I do not authorize Dr. Chen to certify anything tonight. I do not authorize playback. I authorize only creator contact path, because if you updated him into my file, I want the room to see where the call goes." Alvarez repeated every word. Nora told her to preserve the refusal first, then the selected path. The panel chimed. CARE AUTHORITY OVERRIDE REFUSED BY FILE SUBJECT. CREATOR CONTACT PATH SELECTED. For three seconds, the house gave them nothing. Then a number appeared, masked except for its final four digits. Beneath it was not Dr. Chen's office, not a hospital, not any clinic Olivia had ever named. ROUTE LABEL: BLUE ROOM PREPARATION FOLDER. Martha crossed the distance to the bell before Alvarez could block her. This time, when the bell rang, a phone began vibrating inside the locked drawer.
