📖 They Buried the Wrong Heiress
Chapter 53: The Requester Witness - Pressure
The words on the wall did not look violent.
AUTHORIZED PATH: OLIVIA THORNE CONSENT-MEMORY FILE.
They sat in a clean gray band, quiet as office language, and Olivia still flinched as if the house had put a hand inside her skull.
Martha saw the flinch and moved at once. "That is treatment material."
Alvarez's head turned. "Meaning?"
"Meaning my granddaughter has medical privacy," Martha said. Her voice had warmed, which meant she had found a knife she could call compassion. "Memory files are therapeutic. They protect vulnerable family members from agitation, coercion, and public spectacle. If you force her to perform trauma for this woman, Detective, I will have every badge in this room named in the petition."
Olivia's lips parted, but no sound came.
Isabella wanted to answer. She could feel the sentence ready in her mouth: Martha had used privacy as a shredder; Martha had no right to define care. But Olivia's face was on the camera, not hers. Olivia's file was the door Martha was trying to lock.
So Isabella looked at Olivia and said only, "You can refuse the content and still preserve the path."
Martha's eyes cut to her. "How generous. A dead girl instructing the living one how to bleed in public."
Richard stepped between that sentence and Olivia before anyone expected him to move. Not close enough to touch Martha. Close enough that she had to look at him.
"Stop using dead girls as furniture," he said.
The room went silent around the ugliness of it.
Nora's voice came through Alvarez's phone. "Olivia, no one should ask for the memory content. You can authorize a category readout only: what kind of file, who created the access path, and what condition makes the witness speak. That is not the same as opening your treatment record."
Olivia breathed in through her nose. Once. Twice. Her hands curled at her sides, then loosened.
"Category only," she said. "No memory playback. No transcript. No image. If it is really mine, I choose the narrowest label."
Alvarez repeated it for the recording. Downstairs, the officer relayed the boundary to the masked woman by the vault door.
On the phone screen, the woman in the pale medical mask lowered her head. "She has to say she remembers the blue room."
Olivia went white in a different way this time, not fear alone, but recognition trying to surface through deep water.
Martha made a soft, wounded sound. "There. You see? This is exactly the harm I warned you about."
"No," Olivia whispered.
Everyone looked at her.
She was staring past them now, not at the wall panel but at the reflection in its black edge. "You told me the blue room was a nightmare from treatment. You said I made it up after the accident."
Martha's face did not change fast enough.
Ethan's hand flexed once, then opened again where Alvarez could see it. "Visible fact request?"
Alvarez gave a curt nod.
"The system is not asking for a memory playback," Ethan said. "It is asking for a category challenge response. If Olivia confirms the category phrase, the witness condition may release the creator label or access history. It should not expose the underlying memory."
"Should," Martha said. "Again, we entrust a young woman's mind to Mr. Hunt's should."
Olivia turned toward the camera. "I am not entrusting my mind to him."
Her voice was small, but it held.
"I am entrusting one sentence to the record because you have been hiding behind the rest of me." She looked at Alvarez. "I remember the blue room as a phrase. I do not consent to playback."
The wall panel brightened.
CONSENT-MEMORY CATEGORY CONFIRMED.
For one second, Isabella thought the house itself held its breath.
Then the gray band split into two lines.
CATEGORY: CHILD SEDATION COMFORT SCRIPT.
ACCESS CREATOR: MARTHA THORNE HOUSEHOLD PROXY.
Richard made a broken sound. Olivia did not. She stared at the words with a terrible calm, as if the shame Martha had offered her finally had the wrong address.
Downstairs, the masked woman spoke again.
"Requester witness condition one satisfied. Release condition two requires the original comfort voice."
Martha's hand went to her throat.
On the wall panel, a new prompt opened beneath her name.
VOICE SAMPLE REQUESTED: MARTHA THORNE.
