📖 They Buried the Wrong Heiress
Chapter 46: The Same Key
The gray ERV-19 line kept fading in and out, as if the board preview could erase the dead woman by breathing on her name: cross-reference access revocation pending, confirm from MT-EAST-2. Isabella kept her hands lifted where Alvarez's camera could see them. "I do not confirm. Nobody in this room confirms."
Martha gave a small, wounded laugh. "You are very dramatic for someone who claims to want preservation. The system is asking the key holder, not you."
"Then the key holder can answer under warrant," Isabella said, and the word made Martha's eyelids tighten.
Alvarez looked from Isabella's hands to the tablet. "Nora, are you seeing the prompt?"
"Through Richard's camera," Nora said from the speaker. "Detective, read the state into your record. Do not let anyone touch the panel. Richard, say whether MT-EAST-2 is physically in your house or vendor-mirrored."
Richard stared at the screen like the house had found a mouth and used it against him. "It can be either. The key ID belongs to the east sitting room authority route. Physical console, private aide account, or mirrored vendor session. Same authority route. Not necessarily the same hand."
Ethan nodded once, careful and slow. "That's the visible fact. Same key does not prove Martha typed both actions."
Martha turned toward him with relief sharpened into command. "Thank you."
Ethan did not give her the rest. "It proves the same authority route touched both the ERV-19 revocation and Olivia's authorization file. Whoever used it had the same room-level power."
Olivia's phone dipped again. For the first time, she looked less like she was recording a scandal and more like she was standing inside one that had learned her name. "Room-level power," she repeated.
Martha moved toward her instead of the tablet. The change was quick, maternal, almost tender. "Olivia, listen to him. That means vendor contamination. It means Richard's renovation people. It means this girl is making your private embarrassment into leverage because she knows she cannot win on blood alone."
The old room seemed to rearrange around the word embarrassment. Olivia's jaw worked once. Her gaze went to Isabella, then to the gray line fading under ERV-19.
Isabella did not rescue her from the choice. "Your authorization path is evidence. Your humiliation is not the story unless you let Martha make it the price of preserving it."
Martha's face cooled. "You are using an unidentified woman as a weapon against my daughter."
"No," Isabella said. "I am stopping you from deleting her while you use Olivia as a shield."
Leah made a sound behind Isabella, barely more than breath. Alvarez shifted just enough to keep Martha, Olivia, and the tablet in the same frame. "Everyone stays where they are."
The prompt pulsed again. A thin progress bar appeared under the revocation line: time remaining, four minutes.
Olivia saw it and lifted her phone back up with both hands. They shook, but the lens stayed level. "I want it recorded that I did not authorize a donor-media revision, I did not authorize a correction under my name, and I do not consent to any file using my image to clean this."
Martha's softness vanished. "You will regret making a public statement while you are upset."
"Then stop doing things in my name while I am upset," Olivia said.
Nora cut in before Martha could answer. "Good. That statement is narrow. Detective, ask Richard if the authority route can queue public-facing material."
Richard swallowed. "Yes. Donor media, board notices, guest services messages. If Martha's aide account had the right package, it could schedule a correction."
Ethan's attention snapped to the lower corner of the tablet. "There is a second tile."
"Hands visible," Alvarez said.
Ethan lifted both palms and leaned only with his eyes. "Visible text only. Scheduled item. Olivia Thorne donor correction."
Olivia's breath left her as the tile unfolded by itself, gray on blue: public correction queued, sender display Olivia Thorne, release window three minutes. Martha did not look at the screen. She looked at Olivia, and that was worse.
"Mother," Olivia said, very quietly.
Martha's voice turned silk-thin. "Do not call me that while you are helping a stranger strip this family in front of police."
Something in Olivia settled. Not healed. Not loyal to Isabella. Settled enough to stop being pushed.
"Then I will be precise," she said. "Detective, I am Olivia Thorne. I revoke consent for that release."
The public correction tile brightened: consent conflict detected, override available from MT-EAST-2. Isabella felt the next trap snap open. If Olivia touched the panel, Martha would call it consent; if she did nothing, Martha's key could speak for her.
Nora's voice hardened. "Detective, we need preservation authority now."
The progress bar moved to two minutes.
