📖 They Buried the Wrong Heiress
Chapter 38: The Remote Session
Alvarez did not raise her voice. That made the study go colder. "No one touches a phone. No one leaves the room. Richard, hold that screen exactly where it is."
Richard's thumb froze above the trustee app. The small line under the guest-services warning blinked once, as if the house itself were breathing through it. Guest Services Remote Session Active. User: MTHORNE.
Martha looked at the screen and then at Talia. "That is an administrative user label. It has been in the Foundation system for years."
"Then it can survive being preserved," Olivia said.
The room turned toward her. Olivia still had the red engagement alert on one phone and the society editor's email on the other, but her face had changed. Humiliation had not left it. It had hardened into something usable.
Alvarez nodded once. "State what you want preserved."
Olivia looked at Talia first. "Not her confession. Not whatever my grandmother wants her to say while she's terrified." Talia made a small broken sound. Olivia did not soften. "I want the live session preserved, the upload history preserved, the package destination preserved, and any device controlling it identified. I do not authorize deletion, revocation, correction, replacement, or resend under my name."
Nora's voice snapped through Ethan's speaker. "That is enough for the amended emergency order. Alvarez, I need exact wording captured."
"Captured," Alvarez said.
Martha laughed under her breath. "You are all dramatizing a charity tablet as if it were a vault. Talia uploaded a file. She is overworked. She panicked. She tried to revoke access. That is not a conspiracy."
Leah stepped between Martha and Talia before the girl could answer. "If she panicked, she panicked because someone with your user session was still inside the package after the upload."
"You do not know that."
"No," Leah said. "That is why we preserve it."
Ethan had not moved. His eyes stayed on Richard's app, not on Martha. "Ask for session details, not content."
Alvarez glanced at him. "Why?"
"Content inspection may trigger audit locks or remote cleanup warnings. Session details should show controller, endpoint, device, and action queue without opening the documents."
Martha's mouth tightened. "Convenient expertise."
"He answered a question," Olivia said sharply. "He did not choose for me."
That landed harder than Leah expected. Ethan lowered his eyes for one second, and Olivia saw it. The old engagement lie, the contract page, the years of being managed into usefulness, all of it passed through the silence and did not vanish.
Richard tapped the session-details icon with the care of a man opening a wound. The app hesitated, then unfolded a smaller panel. Alvarez read aloud as it appeared. "Remote controller active. Device nickname: West House iPad Two. Location tag: private sitting room."
Martha's hand moved toward her pearl bracelet.
"Do not," Leah said.
Martha stopped. "My sitting room has several devices. Household staff use them."
"At two thirteen in the morning?" Olivia asked.
The panel refreshed again. Talia began crying harder, but this time she did not look at Martha. "Mrs. Thorne told me the authorization was already approved," she whispered. "She said Olivia wanted it queued before breakfast press."
"Talia," Martha said softly.
Alvarez turned her body so the recording caught both of them. "Do not coach her."
Nora was typing fast enough that the keys sounded like rain. "Richard, freeze the session without ending it if the app allows."
Richard found the command. "There is a litigation hold option."
"Use that," Olivia said.
Martha's composure cracked for the first visible time. "You have no authority over Foundation systems."
Olivia lifted the phone with her forged signature on it. "You used my name to enter them."
Richard tapped litigation hold. The app chimed, not loudly, but every person in the study heard it. Remote session preserved. Pending actions paused.
For one breath, Leah thought they had won the turn. Then a second line appeared beneath the hold notice.
Queued package awaiting approval: VOSS CLAIMANT DISCREDIT BRIEF. Destination: Board Emergency Channel.
Olivia read it before anyone else could protect her from it. Her voice came out flat. "She already wrote the attack on Isabella."
The app refreshed one last time.
Approver required: ETHAN HUNT.
