📖 They Buried the Wrong Heiress
Chapter 30: The Vault Under Thorne House
Thorne House looked different when Leah entered through the front door. Not smaller, and not less beautiful. More honest. The marble had always been cold, the portraits had always watched like judges, and the chandelier had always looked sharp enough to fall.
Richard led ADA Alvarez and two detectives through the foyer while Ethan stayed half a step behind Leah. Megan waited outside with Nora and a copy of every file they had gathered. If the house swallowed Leah, the truth would still leave.
Martha waited at the foot of the staircase in gray silk and no surprise. "Richard," she said. "You brought police into your home."
Richard flinched, but did not stop. "I brought them into yours."
For the first time, Leah saw Martha's anger touch the surface. Then Martha looked at her. "And you brought a waitress."
Leah stepped into the light. "You always did hate when staff overheard family business."
Martha's eyes sharpened. Recognition arrived like a door locking. "No," she said softly.
Leah smiled without warmth. "You should have checked the grave yourself."
No one breathed. Richard turned toward her, horror and hope tearing his face open. "Bella?"
"Not anymore."
Martha recovered first. "This is absurd."
ADA Alvarez lifted the emergency evidence order. "The vault, Mrs. Thorne."
"You have no idea what you are opening."
"That is why we brought witnesses."
They descended beneath the library through a panel hidden behind law books Isabella had dusted as a child. The vault door waited at the bottom: steel, biometric, older than the current renovations. Richard placed his palm on the scanner. Access granted.
Martha did not move.
"Mother," Richard said.
"No."
Leah stepped forward. Ethan caught her wrist. "If your print works, there is no hiding after this."
"I stopped hiding when Catherine hit the floor."
She pressed her thumb to the scanner. For two seconds, the machine read the dead.
Access granted: Isabella R. Voss.
Richard made a broken sound. The vault opened.
Inside were shelves of files, old ledgers, medical seals, trust amendments, photographs, and one black box labeled in Martha's handwriting: Contingency - If Isabella survives.
Martha lunged. Ethan caught her before she reached the box.
ADA Alvarez opened it with gloved hands. Inside lay a marriage contract between Olivia Thorne and Ethan Hunt, dated two weeks in the future, and a sealed DNA report.
Leah read the first page. Then the room tilted.
The report did not say Martha had kept Isabella alive for guilt, leverage, or sentiment.
It said Isabella Rose Voss was the only living heir to a hidden controlling block of Thorne Group stock.
