The grave was not in a cemetery anyone from the Thorne family would visit. It waited behind a shuttered church in Red Hook, between a cracked angel and a chain-link fence trembling in the storm. The gray-haired woman, Nora Vale, carried the urn as if it weighed more than ash. "Whose body?" Isabella asked. Nora did not look at her. "No one's. Hospital ash. Unclaimed. The city loses people every day." Megan dug with a borrowed shovel. Isabella tried to help and nearly fainted after the third strike. The drug still moved through her blood. Her shoulder burned. Her engagement ring had cut a crescent into her finger before she tore it off and dropped it into the empty urn. That was the only part of Isabella Thorne they buried. Nora read a prayer without opening a book. "For the girl they made. For the woman who survives her." Megan covered the hole. Isabella stood in the rain until the cheap sneakers filled with mud. She expected to feel smaller. Instead she felt hollowed clean. "Leah Mercer," Nora said, handing her a folded sheet. "Born in Albany. Foster care. GED. No living relatives. Two misdemeanor citations sealed because I still know a clerk who hates rich men more than paperwork." "Why help me?" Nora's face hardened. "Because Elena Voss helped my daughter when no hospital would listen. Because James Voss said the Thornes would kill truth before they let it testify. Because I did not believe him until tonight." Elena Voss. James Voss. Isabella remembered the documents in the ballroom. The Voss Memorial accounts. The name tied to the forged transfers. "Were they my parents?" she asked. Megan and Nora exchanged a glance. That was answer enough to shatter her. Nora stepped close. "Not yet. You do not get to break yet. Grief is for women who are safe." The cruelty saved her. Isabella swallowed the sound rising in her throat. "What do I do?" "Disappear," Megan said. "Work where rich people do not look at faces. Listen. Learn who moved money, who ordered the car, who benefits from your death." "Sebastian and Olivia." "They are knives," Nora said. "Find the hand." Isabella thought of Martha's blue eyes. Catherine's silence. Richard's weak grief. Ethan Hunt watching not her, but the person behind the room. "I need to get inside Thorne Group," she said. Megan shook her head. "Not first. First you learn to be poor enough to be invisible." Across the churchyard, a black sedan rolled past without headlights. All three women went still. The sedan stopped at the corner. A window lowered. Isabella saw only the glow of a cigarette and the edge of a man's profile. Then her dead phone, soaked in bleach and wrapped in Megan's bag, began to ring.
