📖 No Saints at Briar Hall
Chapter 87: The Last Ledger
The alarms did not sound like panic anymore.
They sounded like a door counting down.
Red light washed the corridor where the inner barrier had swallowed my mother. Baines kept his recorder raised. Dana's voice came through Ms. Calder's phone, clipped and strained, naming timestamps, relay IDs, the last visible frame before Nora's chair disappeared.
I wanted to put my hands on the glass until it broke.
I put them behind my back instead.
"Preserve the transfer alert, the barrier state, the staff uniforms, Nora's statement, and the alarms," I said. My throat felt torn open. "Then we preserve the ledger route."
Silas laughed once, soft enough that only people close to monsters would hear it. "Your mother is medically fragile, Ava. You just distressed her into another transfer."
Maddox took one step.
"Maddox," I said.
He stopped with both hands open, every muscle in his neck standing out. "I heard you."
Dr. Ward moved into the red light like she owned it. "No statement given under that level of distress can be treated as competent."
"You displayed her on a monitor to force my signature," I said. "You do not get to decide distress matters only after she speaks against you."
Baines repeated it for the record.
Pryce's face had gone flat with institutional training. "A half-heard name of a defunct residence is not a school file. Founders' Girls House closed years ago. Any remaining material would be historical, protected, and irrelevant to this emergency."
"Plain meaning," I said.
Callum did not answer immediately.
That mattered. His mother had just entered the room without standing in it. Voss Community Futures. The duplicate. Housing money. The thing he had been circling since the storage unit, since the guesthouse went dark, since every sacrifice he made still carried his family name like a stain he could not wash off with wanting me.
He swallowed. "Nora being alive gives testimony value. It does not win by itself. They will attack competency, chain, and medical privacy. The ledger matters because it can connect the systems: Ward payments, Pryce school files, Holloway holds, student housing money, land movement, and adult sign-offs."
"And Voss?" I asked.
His eyes stayed on mine. No flinch away. No plea. "If Voss Community Futures held the duplicate, my family may have preserved the copy that proves they knew scholarship housing money became donor-control money."
Silas smiled wider. "Listen to him. Even he knows this is grief making accusations."
Callum turned his head. "No. I know what a preservation duty sounds like."
Ms. Calder stepped between our side of the corridor and the adults pressing closer. "Baines, request emergency preservation on any Founders' Girls House ledger, red-spine record, continuity ledger, residence-modernization ledger, or duplicate maintained by Briar Hall, Ward Foundation, Harbor Light, Northstar, or Voss Community Futures."
"Already drafting," Baines said.
Dr. Ward lifted her phone. "My counsel will object to medical-adjacent material being folded into a fishing expedition."
"Then object on the record," I said. "Do not call my mother's restraint a fishing expedition."
Rowan was beside me, not touching. His voice was low enough that it did not become theater. "You can hate them after the next instruction."
I nodded once. The grief wanted to become noise. Rowan handed me shape instead.
"Dana," I said, "marker-only. No private Nora material. No Theo. What existing preserved records point to Founders' Girls House or Voss duplicate?"
"Using only already preserved metadata and public or clerk-authorized markers," Dana said. "No content access. I have the East Harbor Unit 14C payment trail, Voss Community Futures quarterly renewal, Founders' Girls House parcel references from the gym records, Northstar residence-hold filings, and the Chapter seventy-nine Briar East ownership contact. Searching labels only."
Pryce said, "That is an unauthorized technological intrusion."
"It is a label comparison on preserved records," Dana answered. "No system entry. No private content."
Maddox had positioned himself between Silas and the barrier. Not blocking the door. Not touching anyone. Making Silas choose whether to push through a boy with open hands in front of a county recorder.
Silas chose words instead. "Ava, if you do this, whatever condition Nora is in when you next see her is on you."
My knees tried to fold.
They did not.
"No," I said. "Her condition is on the people who restrained her, hid her, displayed her, and tried to turn her breath into my signature."
Baines repeated that too.
Dana's typing stopped. "I have a label hit. VCF retention marker, previously preserved from the lock-screen and East Harbor chain. Not content. Marker only. `FGH CONTINUITY DUPLICATE / RED / HOUSING-TRUST ALIGNMENT / ACTIVE THROUGH COMMENCEMENT.`"
The corridor went very quiet.
Callum's face lost all color.
Dr. Ward said, "That proves nothing."
"It proves the words Nora used exist in a Voss-linked retention marker," I said. "Plain meaning."
Callum's voice came back rough. "It means the duplicate likely is not a rumor. It means someone at Voss had a continuity file indexed under Founders' Girls House, tied to housing and trust alignment, kept active through my graduation cycle and yours. If it is destroyed now, destruction becomes part of the case."
Ms. Calder looked at him. "Can you provide a sworn statement identifying your relationship to Voss Community Futures, your prior loss of portal access, and the fact that you are requesting preservation against your family's interest?"
"Yes."
Silas made an amused sound. "Careful, Callum. Your mother will not reward chivalry."
Callum did not look at me for rescue from that. He took Baines's spare form when Baines held it out. "This is not chivalry."
I watched the pen in his hand. My body remembered every pen Silas had tried to put in mine.
"Stop," I said.
Callum froze.
"Say what it does before you sign anything near me."
His throat moved. "It does not bind you. It does not forgive me. It does not ask you to comfort me. It gives the clerk my statement that Voss Community Futures may possess material evidence under a Founders' Girls House duplicate marker and that I request preservation even if it implicates my family."
"Then sign."
He did.
No one spoke over the scratch of his name.
Pryce stepped backward, thumb moving over his screen. Dana caught it before I did.
"Pryce just received an incoming campus-records alert," she said. "Visible preview only from Greer's body-cam angle reflected in the glass. `Historical Residence Boxes: relocation hold pending board instruction.`"
"Baines," I said.
"Preserving visible preview," he answered.
Pryce snapped, "You cannot preserve a reflection."
"Watch me preserve what you show in public after notice," Baines said.
For the first time all night, Pryce looked less like a headmaster than a man standing too close to the paper trail he had fed.
Ms. Calder's phone buzzed. She read, then looked at me. "Duty clerk authorized an emergency preservation request to the county court contact and foundation compliance channels. Scope is narrow: labels, custody, freeze, no content review until order."
"Voss will sanitize it before dawn," Dr. Ward said.
The words left her before counsel could dress them.
Rowan looked at Baines. "That was not a denial."
"Logged," Baines said.
The phone buzzed again.
Dana inhaled. "Foundation compliance receipt came back. Automated, but timestamped. Freeze acknowledged on one matching retained item. Marker visible in receipt."
Callum closed his eyes.
I did not take his hand.
I stepped close enough to read the screen Baines turned toward the recorder.
`FOUNDERS' GIRLS HOUSE CONTINUITY LEDGER - RED SPINE`
`DUPLICATE CUSTODIAN: VOSS COMMUNITY FUTURES`
`AUTHORIZED HOLD: M. VOSS / DONOR DEVELOPMENT RISK`
Below it, in a field labeled cross-reference, another line appeared.
`STUDENT RESIDENCE FUNDS RECLASSIFIED TO PROTECTIVE CONTROL PROGRAM`
My mother had been dragged behind a door.
But she had not given me grief only.
She had given me the last ledger, and it had my boy's family name burned into the first page.
