📖 No Saints at Briar Hall
Chapter 66: Silas Uses the Photo
I did not open the attachment a second time until Baines had two cameras on my phone.
One was his county recorder. The other was Callum's device, held at chest height after I told him exactly where to stand and exactly what not to touch. Maddox stayed five feet back with his hands visible because his anger had gone quiet, which meant it was the dangerous kind. Rowan stood beside the fence, pale, still, waiting for me to decide whether his presence helped or hurt.
The image filled my screen.
Rowan's fingers at my jaw. My hand in his coat. My mouth on his.
Taken from the concession path. Cropped close enough to erase the field, Coach Decker's phone, Baines's recorder, and the five minutes where Rowan had asked before every inch of contact.
UNKNOWN: Tomorrow, he files sexual compromise. Tonight, you decide whether Nora survives it.
"No reply," I said.
Baines repeated it. "No reply from Ava Reed."
"Preserve the sender, time, image, crop, and prior messages about Nora. Also preserve context: this happened after Pryce's lock-screen instruction to Coach Decker and before any conduct notice."
"Done."
My chest wanted to cave around the word sexual. Briar Hall had always known how to make a girl's body sound like evidence against her. Too much bruising meant unstable. Too much silence meant guilty. Too much desire meant compromised.
I refused to look ashamed for them.
Rowan's voice came carefully. "What do you want me to do?"
Not Are you all right. Not Let me handle it.
The right question.
"Stand where Baines can see you," I said. "Say what happened without making it romantic."
Pain flickered through his eyes. He stepped into frame anyway.
Baines gave the time.
Rowan looked at the recorder, not at me. "I asked Ava before standing closer. I asked before touching her face. I asked before kissing her. She set limits. One kiss. Public space. No pulling her against me. No hiding her from cameras. She said it was not forgiveness, not completed trust, not payment, and not a claim. I accepted that. I still accept that."
My throat tightened.
"And," I said.
He understood the part I needed even if it cut him. "And I harmed her before. That history is why consent mattered more, not less."
The message alert chimed again before Baines could finish the note.
This time the sender was not unknown.
SILAS REED: I warned you what they were doing to you.
A second text landed under it.
SILAS REED: I am asking the court and Briar Hall to remove you from sexual influence before you destroy your mother's last chance.
Maddox made a sound like something breaking behind his teeth.
"Hands," I said.
He opened them at once.
Silas kept typing.
SILAS REED: You will come to a private protective review tonight. No boys. No cameras. No lawyers who want you famous. Bring your signature authority.
For one second, all the air left the field.
Private review. No boys. No cameras. Signature authority.
Nora's ring, her wristband, the private server label, and now my mouth in a cropped photo. Every road they built led to the same room: me alone, ashamed, afraid, holding a pen.
"Plain meaning," I said, but my voice scraped.
Callum waited until I looked at him. "He is using the kiss photo to argue your judgment is impaired by sexual influence. If the court or school buys that, he can push to isolate you from witnesses and frame any signature as protective rather than coerced."
"Shorter."
"They want consent to look like incapacity."
There it was. Simple enough for any reader, any judge, any girl in the bleachers pretending not to listen.
"Good," I said. "Record that."
Celeste stood near the concession path with her phone down now, face blank in a way that made me wonder if she felt powerful or afraid. Maybe both. Girls like Celeste had learned early that survival in donor families meant handing another girl to the machine before it asked for you.
I raised my voice enough to carry. "Celeste Ward took the image from that path. If she claims concern, she can preserve the full file, timestamp, and the seconds before the kiss where Rowan asked consent."
Her mouth tightened.
One of the charity-committee girls whispered, "You don't know she sent it."
"Then she should be eager to prove where it went."
Baines marked the statement.
My phone rang.
No name. Blocked.
I let it ring once while the bleachers watched. Then I answered on speaker only after Baines nodded.
Silas's voice came through warm and wounded. He always sounded most loving when he had an audience he had not chosen.
"Ava, sweetheart, this is not punishment. This is rescue."
My skin tried to remember being smaller.
I made it stay in the present. "State the purpose of the call."
"You are eighteen, but you are not thinking clearly. Four boys with every reason to manipulate you have moved you from house to clinic to hearing to public spectacle. Now one of them has you kissing him in front of the whole school while your mother is-"
"Do not use my mother to finish that sentence."
Silence snapped across the line.
I kept my voice even. "State what you want."
"A private protective review. Tonight. You sign a temporary authority acknowledgment so adults can negotiate Nora's care without these boys interfering."
Nora's care. He made the cage sound like a hospital bed.
"No."
"Ava."
"No private review. No signature meeting. No isolation from counsel, witnesses, or recordings. If you are accusing me of sexual compromise, put it in a public conduct hearing with the full context: your threat texts, the Nora image, Pryce's message to Coach Decker, BH-PRIVATE-ARCHIVE-03, and the recording of Rowan asking consent."
Callum's breath caught behind me.
Rowan looked at me like I had handed him a blade and trusted him not to turn it.
Silas dropped the warmth. "You have no idea how ugly that hearing will be."
"I know exactly why you want me afraid of it."
"They will ask what those boys have done to you."
"Then I will answer what adults have done to me first."
The bleachers had gone so quiet the field sounded far away.
Silas exhaled through his nose. "You think a judge wants to see a scholarship girl with four donor sons wrapped around her while her mother lies in a facility?"
"I think a judge should see the evidence you are trying to make me sign away."
"Nora will pay for your pride."
Maddox took one step.
"Stop," I said.
He stopped.
"That was a threat," Baines said into the recorder, voice hard for the first time all afternoon.
Silas hung up.
The call ended, and my hand shook so badly Callum moved before remembering not to. He stopped himself, waiting.
"You can take the phone," I said. "Only to set it on the evidence bag. Screen up."
He obeyed.
Rowan's voice was quiet. "Ava."
I turned.
"If they name me," he said, "I will not hide behind Hale counsel. I will say what happened. I will say what I did before. I will say you chose and set the terms."
"You do not get to bleed for me and call it romance."
"I know."
"You do not get to make this proof you deserve the next kiss."
"I know."
"And if I decide I want you out of the hearing room, you go."
His eyes hurt. "Yes."
The answer steadied me more than a promise would have.
Ms. Calder called Baines's secure line two minutes later. He put her on speaker.
"I heard enough," she said. "Ava, do you authorize me to demand that any sexual-compromise allegation be heard in an open student conduct proceeding with counsel present and all source materials preserved?"
"Yes."
"Do you authorize inclusion of the consent timeline, the unknown sender's Nora threats, Pryce's athletic message, and the private server-route preservation?"
"Yes."
"Do you authorize a notice that any attempt to hold a private review tonight will be treated as coercive signature pressure?"
"Yes."
My phone, sealed on the evidence bag, lit again.
This time it was a Briar Hall emergency notice.
CONDUCT REVIEW: AVA REED. TEMPORARY MORAL WELFARE SESSION. 8:00 P.M. OLD CHAPEL ADMINISTRATION ROOM. ATTENDANCE LIMITED BY HEADMASTER DISCRETION.
Callum read it once and went cold. "Old chapel administration puts you near the same sublevel as the private archive host."
"No," I said. "They do not get me in that building under welfare language."
Baines's secure line chimed with an email.
He opened it, then went still.
"Ms. Calder," he said, "Briar Hall counsel just attached a sealed statement for the session."
"From whom?"
He looked at me like the answer itself might bruise.
"It is labeled Nora Reed."
The field, the bleachers, Rowan's breath beside me, all of it vanished beneath the name.
The attachment title glowed on Baines's screen:
NORA REED STATEMENT RE: AVA DEPENDENCY AND MALE PEER INFLUENCE.
