The ceiling camera had been watching the whole time. Ava stared at the welfare alert until the words separated into weapons. Confidential scholarship records. Active instability review. Removed. Not found. Not requested. Not photographed in a room full of witnesses after Celeste opened the cabinet with her own key. Removed. Briar Hall had taken one picture of Ava holding the ledger and built a noose out of it in less than a minute. Parker Welles backed away from her like instability might be contagious. Two committee girls whispered behind their hands. Celeste had gone very pale, but not innocent. Ava could see the calculation moving under her skin: if the school called this a welfare issue, Celeste could stop being the girl who opened the cabinet and become another concerned witness. Pryce entered the room with perfect timing. "Miss Reed," he said, "put the binder down." Ava laid one palm flat on the open page instead. "No." Maddox made a sound low in his chest. Ava lifted two fingers without looking at him. He went still. That stillness mattered. Everyone had expected the violent boy to prove the alert right. Ava had expected him to want to. He gave her obedience instead, jaw tight, hands open at his sides. "This record cannot leave the room," Pryce said. "Then it stays on the table while Theo photographs the page I am touching." "Mr. Mercer will not photograph confidential files." Theo did not move until Ava looked at him. "The alert already photographed me," she said. "From your ceiling camera. Is that confidential too?" Theo's eyes went to the small black dome above the donor board. His face changed, not with surprise, but with recognition. The kind that hurt. "That's not on the student security grid," he said. Callum's phone was already in his hand. "Plain English." Theo swallowed. "The committee room camera should feed only to campus security. The alert image went to the student feed. Someone with administrative access pushed it out." "Same system as the gala video?" Ava asked. Pryce's voice sharpened. "Do not answer that." Theo looked at Ava, not Pryce. "Same building archive. Different permissions. But the path can be compared." Ava lifted her hand from the ledger and closed the binder with one careful motion. She did not carry it. She did not give them the word removed twice. "Photograph the page you already captured," she said. "Hash the image. Save the alert. Save the camera path if you can see it without breaking anything." "And the donor-room audio?" "Stays with me." "The gala footage?" The question pulled the room colder. Three months ago, Theo Mercer had made a dirty clip clean enough to ruin her. He had trimmed seconds until her face became a lie other people could enjoy. The gala clip had been a grander version of the same sin: edited evidence, polished for public punishment. Ava looked at him. "Can you restore it?" "I think I already have enough cached fragments to reconstruct the full camera sequence. I was waiting until you said yes." Celeste laughed under her breath. "This is insane. You are letting the boy who made the videos fix the videos." Ava turned to her. "No. I am making him pay the debt where he owes it." Theo flinched. Good. He should. Pryce stepped between the table and the door. "No one leaves until this binder is returned and Miss Reed accompanies Ms. Bell." Callum's voice cut through the room. "The binder is on the table. The page has been preserved. I have sent a second notice documenting the emergency alert and requesting the camera access log." "Your mother cannot protect you from discipline," Pryce said. "She will probably help you write it." That quiet admission moved through the room harder than a threat. Ava picked up her phone, the encrypted drive, and nothing else. "I am not going to wellness. I am going to a public computer lab with cameras and witnesses, and Theo is going to restore footage on a screen where I can watch. If you stop me, you can explain why the school can blast my image to every phone but refuses to let me see the original clip used to accuse me." For one second Pryce looked at the phones still held up around the room. He moved aside. The AV lab smelled like dust, hot plastic, and rain trapped in old carpet. Theo unlocked the workstation only after Ava stood behind him. "You sit," he said. Ava almost said no out of reflex. Then she understood. He was not offering comfort. He was giving her the chair, the keyboard, the center. She sat. Theo stood to her right with both hands visible until she nodded. "Tell me every step," she said. "Local cache first. Not the public gala file. The source fragments the projection system used before it stitched the clip." "Meaning?" "The lie was built from real pieces. I am opening the pieces before they were arranged." He did not touch the mouse until she slid it toward him. The screen filled with thumbnails: scholarship office door, donor hallway, empty stairwell, Ava's black cardigan over Celeste's arm. Ava's stomach clenched, but the pain was clean. Not mystery. Proof. Theo clicked one fragment and played it. Celeste entered the scholarship office at 8:17 p.m. wearing Ava's cardigan and carrying a keycard Ava had never seen. She kept her head down until she reached the desk. Then she looked straight up at the camera. The image froze on Celeste's face. Rowan whispered, "She knew where it was." Theo's voice was raw. "Yes." "Keep going," Ava said. The next fragment showed Celeste placing an envelope in the scholarship drawer. The one after that showed a gloved hand removing something from a different angle. The sequence stuttered where the public clip had begun: Ava entering later, confused, framed in exactly the right slice of time. "There are missing seconds," Theo said. "Can you recover them?" "Maybe from the archive mirror." He stopped himself. Ava waited. Theo looked at her. "I used to say that like access made me useful. It doesn't. You decide if I open it." The lab went very quiet. Ava thought of every screen that had made her smaller. Every clip people had believed because Theo Mercer had known how to make lies look high definition. "Open it," she said. "Do not export. Do not upload. Do not send it to Callum. I watch first." "You watch first." He opened the archive mirror. The missing seconds loaded grainy and ugly, the kind of ugly Ava trusted now. Celeste stood at the desk with Ava's cardigan sleeve wrapped around her hand. Graham Ward appeared in the doorway. He did not look shocked. He looked impatient. Ava forgot to breathe. Graham said something the camera did not catch. Celeste nodded, took the envelope from the drawer, and left by the staff door. Then the clip jumped to Ava entering the scholarship office alone. There it was. The theft lie cracked open, not yet dead, but bleeding. Maddox swore softly. Ava held up one hand. "No." "Ava." "No. We do not release it because we are angry. We release it when it protects more than it provokes." Callum's gaze sharpened. "You want authentication first." "I want the ledger, the alert, the donor audio, and this footage tied together so they cannot call each piece an episode." Theo exhaled. "I can make a custody packet. You own the release password." "I own all passwords." "All passwords," he said. His voice broke on the second word. Ava did not comfort him. She let the debt stand between them, visible and unpaid but no longer ignored. Rowan's phone buzzed. He looked down, and whatever he saw took the color from his face. "Isla?" Ava asked. Rowan nodded once. "I texted her after the ledger. I asked if she remembered the internal allocation binder." "And?" He turned the phone so Ava could read the message herself. Tell Ava Reed I need to speak to her before Pryce does. Nora came to me before she disappeared. Ava read it twice. The AV lab, the footage, the welfare alert, even Silas's waiting hand seemed to fall away for one impossible second. Her mother had not only been chasing Briar Hall. Nora had found another girl before the school swallowed her. Then Isla's second message appeared. She said if they ever used edited evidence against Ava, it meant they were almost ready to take the land.
