📖 Fated to the Crown
Chapter 19: The Eye of the Storm
The aftermath of the banquet wasn't a party; it was a cleanup operation. And by cleanup, I mean Kaelen’s guards were scrubbing blood off the marble while I stood to the side, trying to look busy with my laptop.
Sebastian hovered nearby, looking like he’d aged a decade in twenty minutes. "You realize we are walking targets now, right? You didn't just expose a smuggling ring, Elian. You effectively dismantled the primary income stream for half the Alphas in this room."
"I know, Seb," I sighed, typing a command to wipe the access logs. "But look on the bright side. At least now the King knows exactly who’s on his side and who’s currently trying to plot his funeral."
"You are absolutely insane," he hissed.
"Maybe," I agreed, my eyes scanning the room. The air was thick with the scent of ozone—werewolf-speak for 'somebody’s about to get mauled.' The remaining pack leaders were huddled in corners, whispering, their eyes darting toward Kaelen, who was currently standing on the balcony, surveying his 'subjects' like a bored god.
I checked the time. The summit was scheduled to resume in less than an hour. The tension was so palpable I felt like I was walking through Jell-O.
"They're planning something," I whispered to Sebastian, catching a glimpse of a group of warriors from the Pacific Rock pack exchanging a look that was definitely not 'let's shake hands and be friends.' "They aren't just going to roll over because I showed them a few spreadsheets."
"They’re going to kill us," Sebastian said, his voice flat. "That’s what they’re planning."
"Let them try," I said, though my stomach was doing backflips. I pulled out my phone and checked the encrypted messages from Alessia. *West exit is compromised. Guards are moving in.*
"Seb, take Lily and get to the lower level. Find Alessia—she’s our only ticket out if this goes south," I commanded.
"What about you?"
"I’ve got an appointment with a King," I said, glancing up at the balcony.
I turned and walked away before he could argue. My pulse was thudding, my palms were slick, but my head? My head was crystal clear. The storm was coming, and I was exactly where I needed to be—right in the middle of the lightning.
I reached the balcony stairs, my mind already calculating the quickest way to exit if the room exploded. Kaelen turned as I approached, his golden eyes locking onto mine. He looked dangerous, focused, and utterly lethal.
"You’re early," he noted, not looking surprised.
"I’m just proactive," I said, standing beside him and looking out at the snowy expanse. "And I have a feeling the next hour is going to be the longest of our lives."
"Good," Kaelen growled, his hand tightening on the stone railing. "I hate it when things are predictable."
*Predictable,* I thought, looking down at the guards swarming the courtyard below. *Nothing about this is going to be predictable, Kaelen. That’s the point.*
