📖 The Sovereign’s Ledger
Chapter 16: The Vanguard of Ruin
The air at the Bloodmoon borders had turned frigid, a stark contrast to the burning, white-hot energy currently coursing through my veins. From my position atop the high ridge, I could see them. The Silvermane army had arrived.
Hundreds of warriors, led by the golden-haired Prince of the Silvermane pack—my brother Silas—marched toward our gates with a display of arrogance that made my lip curl in a silent snarl. They believed they were here to rescue a 'kidnapped slave' and punish a savage beast. They had no idea they were walking into the hunting grounds of a predator they had spent two decades trying to break.
Silas sat atop a white stallion, his armor polished to a blinding sheen, his hand resting casually on the hilt of his sword. He looked every bit the 'perfect heir,' but I saw the truth behind the mask. He was haggard, his movements jittery, his eyes darting toward our tree line with a frantic, desperate intensity. He was reaching out, his mind clawing against the void where my pureblood vitality used to be, and he was finding nothing.
"Kaelen," I whispered, our bond humming with the shared anticipation of the coming slaughter. "He’s trying to call me. He expects me to still be his battery."
Kaelen, standing beside me in his towering human form, didn't move his gaze from the encroaching army. His face was a mask of cold, calculated indifference, his presence radiating a power that made the very atmosphere heavy.
**"Let him reach,"** Kaelen rumbled, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that promised agony. **"Let him realize that the container is empty, and the weapon he tried to stifle is standing right across from him."**
Silas halted his army a hundred yards from the Bloodmoon gates. He raised a hand, his voice amplified by his wolf’s resonance, demanding a parley.
"Kaelen of Bloodmoon!" Silas shouted, his arrogance barely concealing the tremor of desperation in his tone. "Release my sister! We know you have taken her prisoner, you savage beast! Return the girl and face the consequences of your crimes, or we will raze this fortress to the ground!"
Kaelen didn't bother responding with words.
Instead, he stepped forward, the obsidian gates of the fortress groaning as they swung open. I stepped out beside him, my white fur and silver eyes gleaming under the moonlight—a stark, terrifying testament to the 'useless spare' Silas had left to die in the dark.
The effect was instantaneous.
The Silvermane warriors, who had been shouting and posturing, went deadly silent. They stared at me—the girl who was supposed to be a broken, wolf-less slave—now standing tall, radiating the overwhelming, divine aura of a First Dawn pureblood.
Silas’s face went white. He clutched his chest, a strangled sound escaping his throat as the realization of his ruined future hit him.
"Elara?" Silas stammered, his horse backing away as if sensing the sudden, predatory shift in the atmosphere. "How... how are you... shift?"
I didn't answer him. I took a step forward, the ground beneath my paws cracking slightly under the pressure of my aura. Behind me, the Bloodmoon pack began to howl, a terrifying, synchronized sound of victory that echoed through the entire valley.
**"You came to 'rescue' me, brother?"** I projected my voice, not with words, but through the psychic link he had tried to exploit for nineteen years, making sure he felt every ounce of the contempt I held for him. **"You didn't come for a sister. You came for your fuel. And now, you’re standing in front of your end."**
Silas drew his sword, his hand shaking violently, his eyes darting to the hundreds of Bloodmoon wolves currently emerging from the forest shadows, their fangs bared and eyes burning with Kaelen’s shared wrath. He realized then that he had walked into a trap of his own making.
"Kill them!" Silas shrieked, his voice losing all pretense of nobility. "Kill them all!"
Kaelen didn't wait for the first bolt to fly. He let out a single, earth-shaking roar, shifting mid-air into his massive, golden-furred beast form, and led the charge.
I shifted right beside him, a white flash of divine fury, and we tore into the Silvermane line together. The battle wasn't a fight; it was a reckoning. Silas had built his power on my bones, and tonight, I was going to collect the interest.
