📖 The Sovereign’s Ledger
Chapter 5: The Pureblood Enigma
The water was a miracle.
For the first time in my nineteen years of existence, I wasn't shivering. The massive sunken marble tub was a cocoon of scorching, lavender-scented heat that soaked deep into my aching joints and battered muscles. I watched, mesmerized and horrified, as the water turned a murky, bruised purple, washing away layers of dungeon grime, dried blood, and the toxic ash of shattered silver chains.
I scrubbed my skin until it was raw, trying to erase the phantom sensation of the damp cell, the heavy buckets, and the sting of Silas’s whip. But the physical scars remained. As the dirt washed away, the brutal tapestry of my life was laid bare: the raised, jagged silver burns crisscrossing my back, the mottled purple bruises on my ribs, and the deep, angry gash across my right palm where I had fallen on the broken iron.
A soft, hesitant knock at the door made me flinch so violently that water sloshed over the marble edge.
"Elara?" a gentle, melodic voice called out. "My name is Lyra. Kaelen sent me. I have clean clothes, food, and the pack healer with me. May we enter?"
*Kaelen.* Just hearing the Mad King's name sent a confusing jolt of adrenaline straight to my core. I sank lower into the water, wrapping my arms defensively around my thin chest. "Y-yes," I managed to croak.
The heavy door creaked open, and a breathtaking woman stepped inside. She shared Kaelen's raven-black hair and striking features, but her eyes were a warm, inviting amber instead of a terrifying crimson. She carried a stack of folded silks and plush cotton, completely ignoring the muddy state of my bathwater. She looked at me not with the disgust I was accustomed to, but with profound, undeniable awe.
"By the Goddess," Lyra whispered, setting the clothes on a heated rack. "You’re so tiny. But your scent... it’s incredible. Like rain-washed jasmine and something... older. Ancient."
I shrank back, utterly bewildered. I was a wolf-less spare. I didn't have an enchanting scent; I smelled like bleach and despair.
Behind Lyra stepped an elderly man leaning heavily on a carved wooden staff. His eyes were milky and blind, but his nose twitched as he entered the humid room. This was the Bloodmoon's Witch Doctor, a revered healer who dealt in old magic and herbs.
"Get dressed, child," the old man said, his voice a gravelly rasp. "I need to examine those wounds. The Alpha King’s aura is currently tearing apart the lower courtyard with anxiety, and if I do not assure him you are whole within the next five minutes, he will likely dismantle this keep stone by stone."
The thought of that terrifying behemoth pacing outside, worried about *me*, made my heart skip a frantic beat.
I climbed out of the tub, my hands trembling as Lyra gently draped a massive, impossibly soft white towel over my shoulders. She helped me into an oversized, deep charcoal shirt that smelled intoxicatingly of dark pine and ozone—*Kaelen’s* shirt. It swallowed my small frame, falling to my mid-thigh, but the scent alone acted like a heavy, weighted blanket, instantly calming my racing pulse.
Lyra guided me to a velvet chaise lounge in the corner of the master bedroom. The old healer approached, his sightless eyes unblinking.
"Give me your hand, Luna," he instructed gently.
The title made me flinch. *Luna.* Queen. I extended my right hand, my fingers shaking as the deep, jagged gash throbbed.
The healer took my hand in his dry, weathered palms. He withdrew a small vial of clear liquid—a potent, diagnostic wolfsbane neutralizing agent—and let a single drop fall onto my open wound to cleanse it.
The reaction was instantaneous and explosive.
Instead of burning, the liquid hit my blood and erupted into a blinding, golden-white mist. The scent of ozone in the room spiked, becoming so thick it tasted like static on my tongue. The old man gasped, dropping his staff as if he had been physically struck by lightning. He fell to his knees, clutching my hand, his milky eyes widening in absolute, paralyzing shock.
"By the Ancestors," the healer choked out, his whole body trembling violently. "This... this is impossible."
Lyra rushed forward, her amber eyes wide with panic. "Elder? What is it? Is she poisoned?"
"Poisoned?" The healer let out a breathless, hysterical laugh, staring blindly at my bleeding palm as the golden mist began to rapidly knit the torn flesh together right before our eyes. "She is the cure. This blood... it contains the essence of the First Dawn. The ancient pureblood healing miracle that was thought to have gone extinct a millennia ago."
I stared at my hand in pure horror. *Healing miracle?* No. I was a spare. I couldn't even shift. I was broken.
The healer’s trembling fingers moved from my hand to my wrist, pressing against my pulse point. A deep, furious sorrow twisted his wrinkled features.
"She is not wolf-less," he whispered, his voice cracking with horrifying realization. "Her wolf has been suffocated. Starved in the dark. There is a dark, parasitic tether placed upon her soul. A siphon curse. Someone... someone has been actively bleeding her dry, stealing her pureblood vitality to artificially enhance their own power."
The air in the room vanished.
*Silas.*
The terrifying truth hit me like a physical blow. The way my brother was miraculously stronger than any Alpha in a century. The way he could fight for days without tiring, recovering from lethal blows in mere hours. The constant fatigue that dragged my bones down, the hollow emptiness where my wolf should have been. He wasn't naturally gifted. He was a parasite. He was eating me alive.
Before I could even process the magnitude of the betrayal, the massive oak doors of the bedroom blasted open.
Kaelen stood in the doorway, a terrifying monolith of fury and primal panic. He had heard. His chest heaved, his jaw clenched so tight the muscle jumped beneath his skin. His eyes were not golden; they were entirely, aggressively crimson, burning with an unholy, murderous wrath that made the very air temperature plummet to freezing.
He crossed the massive room in two strides, falling to his knees before the chaise lounge. He didn't look at the healer. He didn't look at Lyra. His massive, clawed hands reached out, gently framing my pale, tear-streaked face.
"Who did this to you?" Kaelen snarled softly, the demonic vibration in his chest promising unparalleled violence. "Give me a name, Elara. Give me a name, and I will paint the continent with his blood."
I couldn't speak. My throat was tight with a lifetime of repressed agony.
Kaelen’s blazing eyes snapped to the trembling healer. The transition from a gentle, protective mate to a lethal, dictatorial King was instantaneous.
**"Listen to me, and listen well,"** Kaelen commanded. It was a pure Alpha decree, laced with so much dominant power that Lyra and the elder were instantly forced to bow their heads, their bodies rigid with submission. **"What you have discovered in this room does not leave this room. Do you understand?"**
"Y-yes, my King," the healer stammered, entirely subdued by the sheer magnitude of Kaelen's authority.
**"If word spreads that my mate carries the ancient healing bloodline, every desperate, dying Alpha and rogue on this earth will hunt her to the ends of the world,"** Kaelen hissed, his fangs fully descended, his territorial instincts completely unhinged. **"I place a gag order on your souls. If either of you speaks a single syllable of her true nature to anyone—even yourselves—I will not simply banish you. I will end you. Her secret is mine to protect."**
"We swear it, Alpha," Lyra swore, her voice trembling but resolute.
"Out," Kaelen growled, not breaking eye contact with me. "Both of you. Now."
They scrambled to their feet, rushing out of the room and pulling the heavy doors securely shut behind them.
The silence that followed was heavy, thick with the unsaid truths of my existence. I wasn't a piece of garbage. I was a stolen treasure, kept in a dungeon so a false king could wear a stolen crown.
Kaelen slowly lowered his head, pressing his forehead against my knees in an act of absolute, shocking submission from a Mad King.
"I tore you from the dark, little wolf," he whispered, his massive hands gently gripping my thighs through the oversized shirt, anchoring me to reality. "But I swear to you upon the moon... I will help you find your fangs. And when you do, we will return to Silvermane, and you will show them the god they mistook for a slave."
