📖 The Luna He Left in the Snow
Chapter 140: Nora Walks Without Guards
The contract wall burned at the bridge's midpoint, a sheet of gold script suspended between the stone arches where no door had ever stood. The words of Nora's own law rippled across its surface, clauses she had written with her own hand now turned against her, binding Frosthold's gates as surely as they had once freed the packless women.
Darius stood at her shoulder, his hand resting on the pommel of a blade that could cut through steel but not through ink.
"You don't go alone," he said.
The words were not a question. They were a line he had drawn in the snow between them, and Nora understood that he meant it as protection, not command. That was the difference now. He would hold the line until she crossed it or stepped back, and he would follow whichever she chose.
She turned to face him. The cold had reddened his cheeks beneath the silver of his eyes, and the tension in his jaw was the only crack in the composure he wore like armor. She had seen that jaw relax in the dark of their chambers, felt it press against her throat in the hours when neither of them could sleep. She knew what it cost him to stand still while she walked toward a trap.
"The law binds everyone equally," she said. "I wrote that. I meant it. If I send guards through first, then the wall belongs to whoever has the largest army. If I walk through alone, it belongs to whoever has the most to lose."
"You have everything to lose."
"Then the wall will know I'm telling the truth."
He held her gaze for a long breath. The space between them felt charged, the air thick with the unsaid things that had gathered since Hope's birth, since the law had sealed itself to her blood, since Elias had stepped through the seam in the council chamber and proved that no fortress could keep out a man who had already learned to live without a shadow.
Darius reached out. His knuckles brushed the curve of her jaw, feather-light, a touch that asked for nothing and promised everything.
"If the wall takes you," he said quietly, "I will find the ink that wrote it and burn every page."
She pressed her palm to his chest, felt the steady beat of the heart that had chosen her when hers was still broken. "Keep Hope warm."
She turned and walked toward the wall.
The script burned brighter as she approached, the clauses rearranging themselves in patterns that made her eyes ache. She felt the heat on her face, dry and unnatural, like standing too close to a fire that consumed without smoke. The words she had written glowed in her memory: *No pack, no Alpha, no council may hold a person against their will by contract, bond, or debt.*
She stepped through.
The cold vanished first. Then the sound. Then the scent of snow and stone and the particular sharpness of Darius's presence behind her. She stood in a space that had no dimensions, a white room where the walls were pages and the pages were walls, and every surface held the same familiar handwriting.
Her own.
Elias stood at the center. He wore no coat, no weapon, no sign of the wealth she knew he commanded. He looked younger here, almost gentle, and that was the most dangerous thing about him.
"The law you wrote," he said, "is beautiful. It will fail."
"You brought me here to tell me that?"
"I brought you here to show you what comes after." He raised his hand, and the wall behind him turned transparent, revealing a scene that made Nora's breath catch.
A courtyard. Sunlight. Children playing in the snow while women sat on stone benches, their faces relaxed, their hands empty of weapons and ledgers.
And at the center, a girl with dark hair and silver eyes, laughing as she shaped a snow wolf with her bare hands. The crown-moon mark glowed faintly at her temple.
Hope.
Nora's daughter, older by years, standing in a world that had no walls.
"She rules safely here," Elias said. "Alone. No throne to fight over. No pack to betray her. No mother-debt to chain her to a war she never chose. You write laws to protect her from the world, but the world will always find her. The only way to keep her safe is to make her the one thing no one can challenge."
Nora forced her voice steady. "You want her to be queen."
"I want her to be untouchable." Elias's smile was soft, almost sad. "You've already written the law that makes it possible. You just need to let the road take you where it wants to go."
