Nora found the entrance where the wine cellar ended and the bedrock began. Darius had shown her every corridor of Frosthold during her first months of recovery, every passage that led to the armory, the infirmary, the council chamber where he tried cases. He had never shown her this. She pressed her palm to the stone wall where the last torch flickered shadows across a seam so fine her fingers barely felt it. The mortar here was darker. Older. And warm where every other stone in the cellar stayed cold. "I didn't know this existed," she said. Darius stood three steps behind her, his breath steady, his posture carefully still. "I knew. I chose not to tell you." She turned. The torchlight caught the hard line of his jaw, the tension in his shoulders that he could not hide. He had carried the weight of Frosthold for decades, and she had never thought to ask what lived beneath it. "Why now?" "Because the map found you anyway." He stepped closer. "Because the southern sky burned your daughter's name, and the white page turned red, and Hope spoke a language that made the walls of this fortress tremble. The gate beneath us has been sealed since my father's father. I thought it would stay sealed forever." "You thought wrong." He did not argue. That was how she knew he was afraid. Nora faced the wall again and pressed harder. The seam gave. A low grinding sound rolled through the stone, deep and ancient, like the groan of something waking after a long winter. The wall split vertically, then horizontally, stones sliding inward and downward in a pattern that should have been impossible. A staircase opened before her, narrow, spiraling into darkness so complete it swallowed the torchlight. The air that rose from below smelled of iron and frost and something older than both. Darius caught her wrist before she could take the first step. "Nora. If you go down there, you need to understand what you're walking into." "Then tell me." He held her gaze. The torchlight carved shadows across his face, and she saw the king in him struggling with the man. "The first Lycan King built Frosthold on top of a ley lock. Every true heir who carried the crown-moon mark was supposed to find their way here eventually. The gate wasn't meant to hide the lock. It was meant to test the one who opened it." "Test me for what?" "Worthiness." His thumb traced the inside of her wrist, slow, deliberate. "And attachment. The lock can be closed only by the current Lycan King or the woman he chooses above the crown." Her pulse jumped under his touch. "You're saying you have to choose me." "I already have." His voice dropped. "The lock knows it. That's why the gate opened for you." Nora pulled her wrist free gently and turned toward the staircase. The darkness waited, patient, hungry, ancient. She had survived Blackridge. She had survived the snow. She had survived childbirth alone in a room that smelled of blood and frost. She would not let a gate decide she was unworthy now. "Then I'll go first," she said. "You can follow when you're ready to mean it." She stepped into the dark, and the stones closed behind her with the weight of a crown she had never asked to wear.
