The dust from the collapsing ceiling still hung in the air when the first messenger arrived. Nora stood at the mouth of the passage, Hope pressed against her chest, watching the women file through with their children. The widow counted heads at the entrance. "Twenty-three mothers. Fifteen infants. Twelve packless." Nora nodded. The silver line on her wrist pulsed like a second heartbeat. Darius appeared at her side, his coat dusted with stone fragments. He didn't touch her, but his presence pressed against the cold like a wall. "The passage leads to the old garrison." "And after that?" "We find Elias before he finds us." The widow's voice cut through. "Someone's coming. South approach." Nora turned. Five figures emerged from the treeline, their cloaks gray with snow and ash. They moved slowly, as if the ground might open at any step. Three carried torches. One carried a bundle wrapped in dark wool. And one carried nothing but the hollow look of a man who had lost everything. Rowan Vale walked at the head of the party, face gaunt, hands unbound. No Alpha's cloak. No pack sigil. He looked older than Nora remembered, as if the months since the Winter Council had carved years into his bones. Behind him, a young woman stepped forward with the bundle. Dirt smeared her cheek. A bruise bloomed under her left eye. She looked only at Nora. "Please," her voice cracked. "The eastern route is collapsing. Our children are trapped in the lower garrison. There's no one else who knows the old tunnels." Nora felt Hope's weight against her chest. She didn't move. "You brought this to me." Not a question. The young woman's eyes filled. She lowered the wool bundle, pulling the fabric aside just enough for Nora to see. The infant inside was sleeping, his face soft, his lips parted. On his forehead, faint as candlelight through frost, a crown-moon mark glowed silver against his skin. Nora's breath caught. Hope stirred against her chest, as if she sensed the other child's presence. "The mark appeared at sunrise," the young woman whispered. "Before the first crack opened in the garrison wall. I don't know what it means. I only know I was told to bring him to you, or he would not survive the night." Rowan hadn't spoken. He stood at the edge of the torchlight, his jaw tight, his hands hanging like dead weights. When he met Nora's gaze, there was no plea in his eyes. Only acknowledgment. Darius moved before Nora could. He stepped between her and Rowan, his body a barrier. "You want her to walk into a collapse to save heirs you put in danger?" Rowan didn't flinch. "I want her to do what I could never do. Choose them over herself." The silence stretched. Nora felt every pair of eyes on her. Darius's hand found the small of her back, steady and waiting. She looked down at the sleeping infant with the crown-moon mark. She looked at Hope, whose mark had never been a weapon. Then she looked at the young woman holding the child. At the bruise that told a story Nora already knew. "Bring him inside. We'll find a way through the tunnels." The young woman's knees buckled. Nora caught her arm. "Don't thank me. I'm not doing this for Blackridge. I'm doing it because no child should pay for what their parents chose." She turned to Darius. His eyes held hers for a long moment. He gave a single nod. Nora looked at Rowan one last time. "You will stand trial. But not tonight." Rowan bowed his head. For the first time, the gesture looked like surrender, not strategy. The silver line on Nora's wrist pulsed, cold and certain. Somewhere beneath the mountain, the map's keeper was already moving toward them.
