The corridor smelled of old iron and slow dust. Nora shifted Hope's weight to her other hip, the baby's small hand gripping her collar with surprising strength. The door at the end of the hall stood flat against the stone--no handle, no hinges visible, just a seam so thin it could have been a crack in the mortar. Five Alphas stood behind them. They had followed through the manor's lower levels at Darius's invitation, their wolves pressing against their skin, uneasy in a place they did not control. Nora felt their stares on her back, on Hope's tiny form, on the impossible stillness of the door ahead. "What lies beyond this room?" Elder Vance asked, his voice too loud. Darius did not turn. "A passage sealed by the first matriarch of Thornveil. It has not opened in four decades." "Then why are we here?" "Because the infant you all came to judge is the first crown-marked child born since that door was closed." Nora stopped three feet from the door. The surface was cool, slick, unnervingly warm beneath her fingertips. She pressed her palm flat. Nothing. Hope squirmed. Giggled. The sound vibrated through the stone. A deep groan rippled beneath Nora's hand, and the seam split--a hairline first, then a finger's width, then wide enough to swallow light. The Alphas stepped back. One of them cursed. The door swung inward without a sound. Beyond it, a small circular room. Lanterns burned along the walls, blue flames that fed from no oil Nora could see. In the center, on a padded bench, sat a girl. Dark hair fell to her waist. Her dress was old wool, faded to gray, the stitching loose at the hem. She could not have been more than seven. Her eyes were open. They were the color of winter sky before a storm. She did not blink. Nora's breath caught. "Who are you?" The girl's mouth moved. No sound came out. She raised one hand and pointed at Hope. The baby laughed again, a clear, bright sound that echoed off the curved walls. The girl's face did not change. But her hand dropped slowly to her chest, where a faint glow pulsed beneath the fabric--an old mark, faded but visible. One of the Alphas spoke. "That's the Matron's seal. She's been here since..." "Since the mothers' debt was signed," Darius finished. "She was the first traded child. The one who was supposed to grow into the throne." "She hasn't aged." "Because she was never meant to leave." Darius's voice was flat, but Nora caught the tension in his jaw. "The door was sealed from this side. She was the lock." Nora turned to face the Alphas. Every one of them had gone still. She saw calculation in their eyes--fear, hunger, recognition of a truth none of them wanted to admit aloud. "Your mothers traded this girl for your pack ledgers," Nora said, her voice low. "For the debts that kept your thrones clean. Do you know what happens when a door like this opens?" The tallest Alpha swallowed. "It can't be undone." "It already is." Nora looked at the child again. The girl had not moved. She sat like a statue, her gaze fixed on Hope, her fingers pressed against the faded mark on her chest. "She waited forty years," Nora whispered. "For a baby's laugh to let her out." The child's lips parted. A single word, breath-thin, crossed the room. "Home." Hope reached out both hands toward the girl. And behind Nora, the sealed door groaned shut again, sealing them all inside.
