📖 The Luna He Left in the Snow
Chapter 113: The First Mother Who Sold the Map
Mara's eyes opened, but they weren't her eyes.
Nora saw the change happen--the gray irises rolling back, the pupils widening until the brown was swallowed by silver. Mara's body went rigid on the cot, her spine arching, her mouth falling open on a breath that didn't sound like air leaving lungs. It sounded like something arriving.
"Mara." Nora stepped forward, but Darius caught her wrist.
"Wait."
"She's seizing--"
"She's remembering." Darius's thumb pressed against the inside of Nora's wrist, a warning and an anchor. "Look at her hands."
Mara's fingers were moving. Tracing. Drawing shapes against the empty air as if she were writing on a surface only she could see. The map. She was mapping the map from memory, her nails leaving faint scratches in the dust motes that swirled around her.
Nora pulled free of Darius's grip, but gently. She sat on the edge of the cot and took Mara's hands, pressing them flat against her own palms. "I'm here. Tell me what you see."
Mara's breath hitched. Her voice came out cracked and young, as if the woman speaking had been replaced by a girl. "The door was red. She painted it red so she could find her way back."
"Who?"
"The mother." Mara's fingers tightened around Nora's. "She had dark hair and a baby on her hip. The baby was crying. She kept shushing it, but her hands were shaking. She couldn't hold the pen steady."
Nora's chest went cold. "She drew the map herself."
"She didn't want to." Mara's eyes focused somewhere above Nora's shoulder, fixed on a point that wasn't there. "She came from the south. A small pack without a name. The women in that pack birthed daughters who were taken. Traded. She wanted it to stop. So she went to the border and she offered them a trade of her own."
"A trade for what?"
"One daughter saved." Mara's voice dropped. "Hers. She would draw them a route to every safe house, every hidden sanctuary, every place the daughters were hidden. She knew them all because she had sewn the maps herself. Blankets. Dress hems. Baby blankets she sent with the girls when they were taken. She remembered every stitch."
Nora's throat tightened. "She sold every other mother's daughter to save her own."
"She thought it would work." Mara's fingers were cold now, trembling. "She thought they would take the map and let her keep her child. And they did. For one night. The next morning, they took the baby anyway. But they kept the map."
"And the child?"
Mara's silver eyes cleared. For a moment, she looked directly at Nora--not through her, not at the past, but at Nora's face, Nora's breath, Nora's waiting silence.
"She survived." Mara's voice broke. "She grew up in a frozen village at the edge of the northern territories. She never knew her mother's name. She was raised by a healer who found her wrapped in a blanket stitched with a route to nowhere."
Nora's pulse stumbled. "What happened to the healer?"
"She died. The girl grew up alone. She learned ledgers. She learned medicine. She learned how to disappear." Mara's grip went slack. "You already know her."
The room went quiet.
Darius moved first. He crossed to the door, opened it, and nodded once at the guard in the hall. "Bring Elias Voss. Now."
Nora looked down at Mara's hands, still resting in her own. The scratches on the air had faded. But the shape they had drawn was burned into her memory--a route from the southern border straight north, through Frosthold, into a village that no longer existed on any map.
The saved child.
Elias Voss, the saved child who had learned to sell maps.
