📖 The Luna He Left in the Snow
Chapter 104: Hope's Name in White Ink
The nursery desk was covered in paper. Nora had pulled every protection law Darius kept in Frosthold's library--treaty copies, council rulings, the original Frost Compact signed a century ago--and spread them across the oak surface in overlapping waves. Hope slept in her cradle by the fire, one hand curled against her cheek, unaware that her mother was hunting through the bones of pack law for a name that should not exist.
Nora dipped the quill again. She had written the secret name on four different documents already. Parchment from the southern packs. Vellum sealed with Winter Council wax. A page torn from the Frosthold registry of protected claimants. Each time, the white ink sat on the surface like water on oil, refusing to sink in.
"Not absorbed," she muttered. "Not recognized."
Darius stood at the window, arms crossed, watching her work. He had not interrupted. He had not suggested. He simply waited, steady as the stone walls around them, and that stillness let her think.
She picked up the fifth document--the oldest, a copy of the first Frost Treaty signed by the original Lycan King. The paper was yellowed, the edges cracked, the ink faded to the color of dried blood. She touched the nib to the surface and wrote the name again.
*Lilian.*
The white ink burned.
Smoke rose in a thin ribbon. The fibers of the treaty curled inward, blackening, and the name carved itself into the paper like a brand. Not written. *Burned.* The fire stopped, and what remained was a scar.
Nora stared at it. "These documents were signed under Seraphine's reign."
Darius moved to her side. "The first treaty predates her by forty years."
"No." Nora shook her head, her pulse quickening. "Look at the seal." She pointed to the wax at the bottom--a crown-moon with a crack running through its center. "That's not the Frost crest. That's the mark of the original council. The one Seraphine destroyed and rebuilt in her own image."
Darius leaned closer. The burned name glowed faintly, silver light pulsing beneath the scar. "The name is older than her."
"Older than everything." Nora's voice dropped. "It was never Seraphine's secret. It was the council's. They buried it."
She reached for the folded protection contract that sat at the edge of the desk--the document Darius had signed the night Hope was born, naming Nora a protected claimant and binding Frosthold's law to her bloodline. She opened it to the final page, where his signature and the crown seal locked the bond into force.
She pressed the white-inked nib to the paper and wrote *Lilian* one last time.
The ink erupted.
Flame raced across the contract, eating the words Darius had written, consuming the seals, devouring every clause and binding. Nora jerked her hand back, but the fire did not spread. It burned only the old words, the old promises, the old protections. When it went out, the page was blank except for the white name, standing alone in the center like a door that had never been meant to open.
And on Darius's palm, where he had gripped the edge of the desk when the fire erupted, a silver wound bloomed. He turned his hand over. The mark of the burned name glowed through his skin, thin lines of white branching like frost across his veins.
He looked at her. "It accepted me as witness."
Nora stared at his palm. The name was not just hers anymore. It had found an anchor.
