The map lay across the nursery table, its edges curling as if the paper remembered the fire it had escaped. Darius traced the coordinates with two fingers, his jaw tight. "I know this line," he said. "It's not a pack border. It's a dead zone. The Frost Treaty says no alpha can claim it. No lycan can hold it. It belongs to nothing." Nora shifted Hope to her other hip. The baby's fingers had found her collar again, tugging at the fabric with gentle insistence. "So the message came from a place with no law." "Worse than that." Darius straightened, his eyes meeting hers. "It's the same border the old Ashford trade routes used before your grandmother died. The manor that owns no pack sits on ground that doesn't belong to anyone alive." "Then we go." He didn't argue. He didn't tell her it was dangerous. He simply reached for the map and folded it into his coat pocket with a quiet, deliberate motion. "If we go, Hope leaves Frosthold. I can't protect her the same way beyond the treaty line." Nora looked down at her daughter--the small curve of her cheek, the faint shimmer of the crown-moon mark just visible at her collarbone. "I know what you're asking." "I'm not asking." Darius's voice was low, rough. He stepped closer, close enough that the heat of him cut through the nursery's cold. "I would never ask you to cage her in these walls, Nora. But I want you to know what you're walking into. Out there, my authority ends. The Frost Treaty doesn't recognize me past that line. If something happens--" "Hope isn't a relic." Nora cut him off, her voice harder than she'd intended. "She's not a throne. She's not a weapon. If I hide her inside Frosthold like a sealed vault, I'm already letting Seraphine win. Every locked door is a promise I made to someone else's fear." Something shifted in Darius's expression. Not anger. Not frustration. Recognition. He crossed the remaining distance until his chest almost brushed hers, his head tilting down so his breath stirred the fine hairs at her temple. "Then I carry her." His hand rose, fingers brushing her jaw with a touch so light it might have been accidental. "I carry both of you. But I need to know--are you ready to let the map open?" Nora's pulse beat against her throat. She didn't pull away. She looked down instead. The folded page in his pocket had begun to glow, a thin silver light seeping through the fabric, threading between the buttons of his coat. "It only opens at the border," she said. "And only for the one carrying the blood." She shifted Hope's weight, positioning the baby's small hand against her own chest, directly over her heart. Hope's fingers uncurled. She pressed her palm flat against Nora's sternum, her touch warm, certain, and impossibly small. The map in Darius's pocket ripped open with a sound like tearing silk. Silver light spilled across the floor, pouring into the shape of a road that had not existed a moment before--a road that cut straight through the nursery wall and into the frozen white beyond. Darius pulled the map free. The coordinates had vanished. In their place, a single line of text, written in the same smoking ink that had burned Seraphine's grave open: *The border recognizes her. Do you?* He read it once. Then he looked at Nora, his eyes dark and steady. "I've recognized her since the night I found you in the snow." He folded the map, tucked it back into his coat, and held out his free hand. "Let's go meet a manor that owns no pack." Nora took his hand. His fingers closed around hers, warm and sure. Hope's small hand still pressed against her heart, steady as a second pulse. The silver road waited.
