📖 The Luna He Left in the Snow
Chapter 89: Circle of Four Witnesses
The guards brought them in one at a time, footsteps sharp on the stone floor.
Nora stood at the center of the circle she had marked--salt, ash, moonstone dust catching firelight. The lines had taken her an hour to draw, her fingers raw from grinding the stone until the joints ached. Hope was three corridors away with Maeve. She could not hold her child for this. The weight of the journal pressed against her ribs, hidden in her coat, the hidden journal's cracked leather a reminder of every truth she had dug up.
Darius held the northern point, arms crossed. He had not argued when she told him what she intended. Only nodded, his jaw tight, his eyes tracking every guard's exit like a wolf counting prey.
Elder Callum stepped over the salt line without hesitation. "You have no authority--"
"Name what you stole."
He stopped. The fire popped behind her. Wind pressed against the windows, rattling the panes, and a draft curled around her ankles.
"I stole from the widows' fund," he said, jaw tight. "The winter grain. Sold it south. Hid the ledgers. The money is gone. I spent it on bribes to keep my seat."
"Step out."
He did. Wall to his back, mouth a white line, hands shaking. She did not watch him leave.
Rowan walked in unescorted. He stopped at the salt line and met her eyes. No guard behind him. No apology in his stance, but something raw at the edges.
"Name what you protected."
He exhaled, breath clouding in the firelight. "My pride. The lie that I was a good Alpha. My reputation--at the cost of your safety and our child's life. I protected the pack's image while Iris bled you dry. I knew about the fertility rumor. I did not stop it."
She nodded once. "Stay."
He stayed.
Iris came in shackles. The enforcers removed them at Nora's insistence. She knelt at the circle's edge, head bowed, hair falling forward.
"Name what you stole."
"Your marriage. Your place as Luna. Your future--the fertility rumor so no healer would touch you. Rowan's attention, your safety, your hope." Her voice cracked. "And the truth about the promise. I knew Seraphine had a name on you. I did not tell you because I was afraid she would turn on me."
The room held still. Nora's throat burned.
She looked past them--to the man who had not spoken. The weight of the circle pressed on her shoulders. "Your turn."
Darius did not move.
"Name what you have protected. And name what you want."
He stepped forward, stopped at the salt line. "I have protected you. Hope. Your right to choose." His throat moved. "And I have protected the truth I have not told you."
She waited. The firelight flickered, painting shadows on his face.
"I want you. As my mate. As the woman I wake beside. As your partner--not someone you need protection from." His voice dropped. "I have not named it because I am afraid you will see it as another cage."
The salt line glowed at her feet. She looked at the four faces--the thief, the coward, the liar, and the man who had named his own hunger.
Her own name had not been spoken yet. But it hung in the air, waiting to be claimed.
