Iris's body arched once, then went still. The name settled into her like water finding the lowest ground. Nora watched her throat work, watched her swallow something that was not air. When her eyes opened again, they were pale green, but something had moved behind them. A locked room. A door with no handle on the inside. Maeve stepped back, a low sound in her throat. Nora didn't move. Hope's crying softened against her chest, the glow fading from her back. The name no longer pressed against her skin. It had found a home. "Nora." Darius's voice came low and steady. "She's carrying it now. You have minutes, not hours." "I know." Nora looked at Iris. She stood with her hands loose, her posture wrong--too still, too straight, like a woman who'd forgotten how to breathe without permission. "Iris. Can you hear me?" Her lips parted. "Yes." The word came clear, but there was an echo beneath it, a second tone, like two voices speaking the same syllable at different distances. "She'll push through," Nora said. "The name wants to be whole. It will try to move back into Hope the moment I start cutting." Darius stepped closer, heat at Nora's shoulder. "Then we don't give it room. I hold the circle. You cut." "And Iris?" He looked at her, jaw tightening. "She chose this. We respect the choice by using it." Nora wanted to argue. But the mark on Hope's back had gone quiet, and that quiet wouldn't last. She turned to Iris fully. "You'll feel it. The name will fight to keep you. It will offer you power, protection, a place where no one can hurt you. You can't accept any of it." "I know." Her voice cracked, and for a moment Nora heard only her. "I know what it costs to be a vessel. I spent five years being one for Rowan's ego." She lifted her chin. "I can be one for something that matters." Nora nodded once. She knelt, laid Hope on the fur-lined mat, and unbound the cloth from her back. The crown-moon mark was pale, the silver lines dimmed to old scars. But beneath it, a faint shadow--a bruise pressed into skin from the other side. The cult name. Not removed. Just displaced. Nora placed one hand flat over Hope's back and closed her eyes. The blood-circle hummed under the stone floor, a living thing that hadn't yet closed its mouth. She pulled from it, from the frost in the walls, from the iron in the hinges, from the bond that tied her to Darius. "I pronounce the name unclaimed," she said. "It was never given. It was never accepted. It was stolen through blood that had no right to speak it." The shadow beneath Hope's mark twitched. Nora felt Iris go rigid behind her. The name was moving. It didn't want to leave the child. It had rooted between Hope's ribs. She pulled harder. The shadow lifted--a thread of darkness rising from Hope's skin like smoke. It hung in the air, uncertain, seeking. Iris made a sound. Not a word. A breath. The thread turned. It found her. It drove into her chest like a blade. Iris dropped to her knees. Her hands hit the stone floor, and she shook--once, twice, a violent shudder Nora felt through her boots. When she looked up, her eyes were black. Empty. The color of a room with no windows. "Done," Nora whispered. Darius crossed the room in three strides and pressed his palm to the door. Frost bloomed under his hand, spreading across the iron in fractals. "She felt the shift in the circle." His gaze met Nora's. "She's coming." The torches went out. Not slowly. Not flickering. They died at once, as if someone had reached through the flames and pinched them. The room fell into darkness so thick it had weight. Then the cold came. Wet, hungry, the kind that crawled under skin and found the places where memories lived. From the dark, a voice. Soft. Almost gentle. "You have something of mine, Nora Ashford." Iris went stiff. Her black eyes fixed on the shadow at the far end of the room. And the name inside her answered.
