📖 The Luna He Left in the Snow
Chapter 69: The Second Name
Nora's fingers still trembled from the blood on the bridge rail when they stopped the convoy in a hollow between two hills. The women and children huddled against frozen earth, passing bread in silence. No fire. No one spoke Seraphine's name.
Nora knelt beside the cart where Maeve held Hope. The baby was awake, dark eyes reflecting pale sky through the canvas flap. The crown-moon mark on her chest glowed faintly. Nora pressed her palm to Hope's back and felt the small heartbeat.
"I need to see the ledger page."
Maeve pulled the folded paper from her coat. The ink was smudged, water-damaged, but the center lines were legible. Nora turned it toward the thin light and read the column titled *Unborn Heirs -- Bound Names*.
Hope's entry was near the bottom.
*Mother: Nora Ashford. Father: Rowan Vale. Pre-Birth Registry: Contracted under fertility bond, signed before quickening. Assigned Cult Name: Lirien. Claimant: Seraphine of Thornveil. Second Claimant: Frost Lineage Perception. Transfer Clause: Name activates upon first spoken recognition by a bonded non-parent.*
Nora read it again. *Lirien.* Not a pack language she knew.
"She named her before she was born," Nora said, her voice flat. "Rowan signed a pre-birth claim. He gave Seraphine the right to name Hope before I knew I was pregnant."
Maeve's face went white. "He couldn't have."
"He did." Nora folded the page carefully and tucked it inside her collar, against her skin, where the bond-thread to Darius still hummed like a second heartbeat. "He signed while drunk, grieving, while Iris fed him lies. He gave my unborn child a cult name before she took her first breath."
Maeve shook her head slowly. "That kind of contract can't be broken by a Council ruling. It's soul-ink. It binds the child's spiritual name to the claimant until the child herself rejects it."
Nora looked down at Hope. The baby's fist curled around a strand of Nora's hair, pulling with aimless strength. A small breath escaped her lips--not a cry, not a word, but the shape of something waiting.
"She can reject it," Nora said. "But she has to be old enough to speak. And Seraphine knows that."
Maeve's hand went to her mouth. "She's not chasing Hope to steal her. She's chasing her to get the name spoken before Hope can refuse it."
Nora stood. Her knees ached. Her shoulder burned where the iron rail had cut her palm. But her mind was clear, cold.
She walked to where Darius stood at the edge of the hollow, watching the tree line with the stillness of a man who had learned to wait for monsters. He turned when she reached him, and she saw it before he said a word.
The thin black line on his chest had not healed. It had deepened, widened, taken the shape of letters. The skin around it reddened as if branded by cold iron.
*Lirien.*
The name curved across his pectoral like a scar laid over living bone. He did not flinch when Nora touched it. The letters were raised beneath her fingertips, warm and wrong--a wound not inflicted by blade or claw.
"It appeared when you read the page," he said. "I felt it split the skin."
Nora pressed her palm flat over the name. The bond-thread between them flared, sharp, and she felt the weight of the cult name pressed against her own chest like a second mark trying to take root.
"She can't claim Hope through him," Nora said. "But she can claim her through the name. If she speaks it to Hope before Hope learns to refuse it, the contract seals."
Darius caught her wrist. Not hard. A question, not a restraint.
"Then we make sure Hope hears her real name first," he said. "Every hour. Every day. Until the sound of *Lirien* means nothing to her."
Nora looked down at the letters branded into his skin. A wound she had not given him. A name she had not chosen.
"Hope Ashford," she said, loud enough for the baby to hear from the cart. "Your name is Hope Ashford."
The letters on Darius's chest pulsed once, dark, and stayed.
