The dawn light came through the gap in the curtains and painted a silver stripe across Darius's bare chest. Nora's palm still rested over her own heart, feeling the pulse of warmth that had settled there during the night. She sat up slowly, pulling the sheet with her. The movement woke Darius. He did not speak. He simply watched her press her fingers to the place where the single crescent used to sit. Now there were two arcs--silver and gold--curved around each other like the beginning of a circle that had not yet closed. "It's different," she said. Darius rose from the bed and crossed to the window. He gave her space to see what the change meant before he offered his own reading. "The bond-thread you chose last night changed the mark. That is what it looks like when a mate bond is chosen rather than inherited." "It's stronger." She felt it--the mark did not tie her to him like a tether. It pushed outward like a shield, like walls rising from her ribs to meet his, a barrier that belonged to her as much as to him. "It chose you back," Darius said. "You didn't claim my protection, Nora. You accepted it, and the mark reshaped itself to match. No law can break that. No council can overturn it. You're protected because you decided to be." She looked down at the overlapping crescents. They pulsed warm against her skin. She had not surrendered her autonomy. She had anchored it in something that could not be owned. Hope slept on in the cradle by the fire, unbothered. Nora dressed quickly. When the mark changed, she had felt a ripple in the air--like a stone dropped into still water. A signal. She did not know how far it traveled, but she knew who would be listening for it. "We need to move the convoy." Darius was already pulling on his coat. "How long do we have?" "I don't know. But she felt it. Seraphine felt the moment this mark settled." Nora lifted Hope from the cradle and tucked her into the sling. "The mark was meant to be a weakness. A way to track the crown-moon heir. That's why she built the nursery. That's why she left one bed warm." Darius stepped close and placed his hand over the mark on her chest. "It's a door that locks from your side." Nora pressed her hand over his. "So we change the route. Through the Frostwood instead of the valley. The trees break the signal. And a decoy rider north in my cloak." He tilted his head, watching her lead. "The Frostwood adds three days." "Then we leave now." Two hours later, the convoy reached the tree line. Nora stopped and looked back at the abandoned road. Far behind them, a dark shape stood where the bridge should have been--a woman's silhouette without a shadow. Seraphine raised her hand and pressed her palm flat against the air, still feeling the warmth of the mark trailing through the forest. Her fingers curved as though tracing a line on a map. Then she smiled. The hunt had only become more interesting.
