The cold hit Nora before she crossed the threshold. It wasn't the ordinary chill of stone and shadow, the kind that seeped through wool and settled in the joints. This cold had teeth. It bit at her cheeks and turned her exhale to frost before the air could escape her lips. She stopped with one foot inside the nursery and raised the lantern. The light caught the shape of six small beds arranged in a crescent, each one carved from pale wood and draped in white linen that hung to the floor like burial cloth. The windows were sealed with iron grilles. No crib. No toys. No mobiles. "This isn't a nursery," Darius said from behind her. "It is." Nora stepped forward and felt the cold change. It came from the floor. "This is exactly what it looks like. It's a room where children were kept." Kept. Not raised. She moved to the nearest bed and touched the linen. It was damp. She lifted the fabric and found the mattress beneath was thin, barely three inches of straw and wool laid over a wooden slat. And beneath the slat, something moved. Not a rat. Not a draft. A slow, rhythmic pulse that vibrated up through the stone. "They built the beds over channels," Nora said. She knelt and pressed her palm flat to the floor. The stone was warm there, a shocking contrast to the air around her. "Heat runs beneath them. Controlled heat. Whoever designed this could warm each bed individually." "Why would someone need to warm a baby's bed from underneath?" Nora rose and looked at the arrangement again. Six beds, evenly spaced. Identical. Nothing personal. Nothing soft. She turned and looked at the door. It had a lock on the outside. No handle inside. "They weren't keeping children warm, Darius. They were draining them." She moved to the second bed and pulled back the linen. The same thin mattress. The same channel below. But this time she noticed a small symbol carved into the headboard. A circle with a crescent inside. The same mark she had seen on Seraphine's forehead in the basin vision. "Mother-bonds. The heat pulls the bond energy out of the child and funnels it somewhere else." Darius was silent for a long moment. "Into who?" "I don't know." Nora looked at the remaining beds. "But I know one thing. These beds aren't empty because the children died. They're empty because the children were moved." She walked to the third bed and stopped. The linen was dry. She touched the mattress. Warm. She pressed deeper and felt the impression of a small body still pressed into the wool. Fresh. Recent. She looked at Darius and saw the same recognition harden his jaw. "Someone was in this bed today." Nora pulled her hand back and stared at the empty cradle of warmth that still held the shape of a child who had been taken. She thought of Hope, safe in the Frosthold nursery with Maeve, and the distance between this room and that one stretched like a wound. "Find whoever keeps the lower records," she said. "I want to know who paid for this room to be built. I want the dates. I want the names." "And the bed?" Nora looked at the warm linen. At the shape of a child that would cool before dawn. "Leave it." Her voice was quiet. "I want Seraphine to know we found it." Darius stepped closer and placed his hand against the small of her back. His palm was warm, steady, grounding. She leaned into him without thinking, and for a moment the cold let go. Then the heat from the third bed pulsed once, sharply, as if something inside it had heard her. One bed was still warm. And it knew she was there.
