📖 The Luna He Left in the Snow
Chapter 58: The Southern Summons
The paper arrived before noon, sealed in Winter Council gray. Nora took it in the infirmary doorway, her fingers still stained with white vein ink. She had not slept more than four hours in two nights. Hope was with Maeve in the nursery corridor, and the silence from that direction felt like a held breath.
She broke the seal standing up.
Darius appeared at the end of the hall before she finished reading. He watched her face. Frost spread in thin lines across the nearest torch bracket.
"Custody petition," Nora said, voice flat. "Filed with the Winter Council three days ago. The petitioner claims to be a maternal relative with rightful blood claim to Hope's placement and rearing."
"Who signed it?"
She turned the paper so he could see the bottom. *Elena Marchett.* Clean, precise, educated.
"Dead since last spring. I checked Blackridge's death ledgers. Body released to a courier service that doesn't exist anymore."
Darius crossed to her but didn't take the paper. His body heat pressed through the cold air.
"The Council knows it's a forgery," he said.
"They're requesting my presence to verify it anyway. They want me to travel south and answer a petition written by a dead woman in her own handwriting." She met his eyes. "That's not a request. Refusing means forfeiting protected claimant status automatically."
"Thornveil will know your route before you leave the northern border."
"If I don't go, I lose Frost protection without breaking your law. Then I'm a packless woman with a marked child and no legal name."
Nora read the third paragraph again. The language used phrases only someone who had read Blackridge's private ledgers would know--the date of Rowan's rejection, the hour of the blood ceremony, the healer's note about her pregnancy discovered during a fever check.
Someone inside Frosthold had fed information south. Or the Council had been waiting since the day Hope was born.
Nora folded the paper and tucked it into her belt. "I'll go."
Darius brushed his thumb across her knuckles--barely a touch. His restraint cost him something. The tight line of his jaw said enough.
"I don't like it."
"Neither do I."
"But you're not asking permission."
"I'm not." She let her fingers curl around his for half a second. "I'm asking you to stay here. If Thornveil watches the road, she watches Frosthold too. Hope needs someone who can close every door she tries to open."
Darius looked at her. The frost on the bracket cracked.
"I'll follow with the second convoy," he said. "Three days behind. If you're not at the Council chambers by the time I arrive, I'll enter under full heraldry and claim the floor by right of northern sovereignty."
"That sounds like a threat."
"It's a promise. You already know I keep those."
Nora turned toward the nursery.
Behind her, the petition lay open on the infirmary table. The dead woman's signature caught the winter light--*Elena Marchett*--and at the very edge of the ink, the letter *T* was pressed slightly deeper into the fiber than the rest.
As though the hand that held the pen had been steadied by someone standing behind the writer.
Nora saw it. She did not stop walking.
She knew exactly who had held that pen steady.
