The northern corridor smelled of pine resin and cold stone, with a faint sweetness Nora recognized from Iris's white vein. She followed Darius past the armory and a stairwell that spiraled into darkness. Her legs ached. She had not held Hope since noon. Darius stopped at a plain door. "This room connects to mine through a shared washroom. The door on the far side locks from your side. I will not enter without your word." Nora studied his face. He offered a wall between them with a door she controlled. "You want me to move out of the nursery wing." "I want you to have a space no servant enters without knocking. Any messenger can hear Hope cry. That is a risk you do not need." She pressed her palm to the wood. It was warm. "And if I refuse?" "Then I double the guard on the nursery and move my quarters beside yours. Protection is not conditional on your answer." She almost smiled. "You would rebuild the corridor if I preferred a different one?" "I would." Five years at Blackridge had taught her to sleep behind an unlocked door. "I will take the room. You sleep on your side until I say otherwise." He inclined his head and opened the door. The room was smaller but brighter--a wide window faced east, afternoon light fell across a bed carved with frost ferns. A writing desk stood beneath the window. A cradle sat near the hearth, lined with wool and a folded blanket. "You prepared for an infant." "I prepared for you to bring her. The nursery is safe. This room is sanctuary." She touched a stuffed rabbit in the cradle, stitched with uneven thread. "Did you make that?" "Maeve taught me. The ears are hers." She turned away before her eyes betrayed her. "Thank you for asking instead of assuming." "You will not be owned here, Nora." She wanted to believe him. Then she noticed a single pale droplet on the stone floor near the door frame, already drying. She said nothing. Wiped it with her boot. Then stopped. That was what Blackridge had trained her to do: erase the small wrong thing. She crouched, tore a strip from her sleeve, and pressed it to the crust. The stain darkened, drawing a hair-thin line across the fabric--not south, but toward the cradle. Darius went still. "Do not touch it," she said. He obeyed. She folded the cloth around the crust. "This room is bait. If the patron reached the threshold before Hope arrived, she was watching the choice." "Then I move you out." "No. We make her think I moved in because I was frightened. Tomorrow we test whether this stain answers to my blood, Hope's mark, or the door." She had a trace. That night, after Maeve brought Hope and the fire burned low, Nora lay on the bed with her daughter curled against her ribs. The bolt on the washroom door was thrown. She checked it twice. Hope stirred. Her tiny mouth opened, and then her face relaxed into a real smile--directed at something over Nora's shoulder. Nora turned. The room was empty. The fire crackled. Hope laughed--a high, bubbling sound of genuine delight. Her eyes tracked something Nora could not see. Nora gathered her closer. "Hope. What do you see, baby?" Hope laughed again. She turned her head toward the bolted washroom door and reached one tiny hand toward it--as if she expected someone to open it. The bolt shifted. Not unlocking. Not opening. Just shifting, as if something on the other side had tested her decision. Nora slid one hand beneath the pillow and closed her fingers around the folded cloth. The stain inside it warmed like a tiny living coal. "Darius," she called. "I hear you." His voice came through the door, low. He did not open it. "Witness only. Do not open it." "Witnessing." The bolt trembled. Frost feathered across the iron, forming three letters before melting into the dark. S O U. South. The room Darius had offered her was not a hiding place. It was the first door Seraphine had failed to open.
