Two guards brought Rowan Vale into the northern holding chamber with chains on his wrists and a silver collar bolted around his throat. The collar was not decorative. It cut his wolf from his voice and left him human, breathing hard, blinking against the lamplight like a man who had forgotten what clean air tasted like. Nora stood behind the iron table. She had left Hope with Maeve and a sealed door, and the absence of her daughter's weight against her chest made her arms feel hollow. She pressed her palms flat on the cold metal and watched Rowan shuffle to the chair across from her. The guards chained his ankles to the floor ring before stepping back to the walls. Rowan looked older than she remembered. The gauntness that had shadowed his face in the Frosthold courtyard had deepened into hollows beneath his cheekbones. His hair hung lank, and a bruise flowered along his jaw where someone had been less than gentle during the arrest. He met her eyes without defiance and without apology. "You came to kill my child," Nora said. Her voice stayed level. She had practiced that steadiness in front of a mirror while Hope slept. Rowan shook his head. "I came because he told me the child would not die. He promised me that. I believed him." "Who promised you?" "The patron." Rowan wet his cracked lips. "I never saw his face. Always a veil, always a different voice through a speaking stone. But he had access to the old records. He knew where Seraphine's first nursery had been hidden. He knew the child's true birth hour before anyone else." Nora's fingers tightened on the table edge. "And what did he promise you in exchange?" "A child that would not die." Rowan's voice cracked. "My pack had lost three infants that winter. I had lost one of my own. The patron said he could give me a child marked by the moon's first shadow--an heir who could not be taken by sickness or blade. He said the Ashford line carried it. He said Hope Ashford would be that child if I helped him retrieve her." "Retrieve her." Nora repeated the word like it was poison. "She is not a stolen package. She is my daughter." Rowan lowered his head. "I know that now. I didn't then. I was desperate. I was stupid. I thought if I brought the child to the patron, he would give her back to me once she was weaned. He said she would be raised in a nursery with other marked children. That she would never be alone." Nora forced herself to breathe. The air in the holding chamber was thick with dust and the metallic tang of the silver collar. "Where is this nursery now?" Rowan looked up. Something flickered in his eyes--fear, or warning. "He has another heir," Rowan said. "Hidden in Blackridge. A child born the same night as Hope. Registered under a private name. The patron told me he didn't need the first one if the second survived. He only needed one marked heir to carry the pact forward." Nora's blood went cold. Another heir. Seraphine's work, left unfinished, split across two cradles. She thought of the private name registered in the southern seal--*the first mother*--and the shadow that had moved beneath Hope's empty cradle. "Blackridge," she said. "Is the child still there?" "I don't know." Rowan's chains clinked as he shifted. "The patron stopped speaking to me after the Frosthold raid failed. I was a liability. I expected to die in the snow. But if he has another heir, he won't stop. He will send someone else, and they will not come with a blade. They will come with a name and a claim." Nora turned from the table. She stared at the narrow window set high in the stone wall--a slit of gray sky that offered nothing but more winter. "Guards," she said. "Take him to a cell. Keep the collar on." She did not look back as she walked out into the corridor. Her arms ached for Hope's weight. And her mind raced toward Blackridge.
