The nursery smelled of milk and rosemary and the thin candlewax sealing the cold out. Nora sat in the rocking chair, Hope against her chest, watching the child's tiny fist open and close around nothing. The room was quiet. Too quiet. Frosthold had settled into guarded sleep, and even the wind had stopped pushing at the glass. Hope stirred. Her lips parted, and a thin, rising cry caught the moon before it left the sky. The white-ink message on the table began to smoke. Nora rose without jostling the baby, crossed to the parchment, and flattened her palm over it. The heat beneath was not fire-warm. Body-warm. As if something had breathed on the other side of the paper. A blood-tracking spell keyed to the crown-moon mark's first resonance--meant to find a child through the sound of its own life. "Darius." He was in the doorway before the name left her mouth, still in the dark council shirt, a blade in one hand and no boots on his feet. "The ink is moving," he said. Nora lifted her hand. The white line that had read *The patron cannot die while the first crown-moon daughter still breathes* spread. Letters crawled toward the edges like roots searching for soil. Where they touched the wood, the grain darkened. Hope cried again. The letters pulsed. "Keyed to her voice," Nora said. "To her mark." Darius set the blade on the table's edge. "Burn it." "It will reappear somewhere else. Probably closer." "Then we move her to the stone chamber." "And keep her underground for life?" Nora shook her head. "That is not a plan. That is a cage with better walls." Hope's crying softened into a hiccup. The ink stopped moving, contracted to its original shape--smaller now, as if fed and satisfied. The tether was a tracking thread spun from blood and moonlight, written to find her daughter through the first thing every child did: announce they were alive. She made a decision. "I am not hiding her from the moon. If the patron can track her through the mark, then I want it visible. I want every pack in the north to see that Hope Ashford exists, protected by Frost law and her mother's name." Darius's jaw tightened. "That makes her a target." "She is already a target. The difference is whether we fight from a defensive crouch or from a position that makes the patron bleed light again. You said yourself that daylight cost her. So we give her more daylight. Witnesses. The women who swore their own names in the snow--Lina Ash, Rose, June Cross. A hundred women who will swear this child belongs to no throne." He held her gaze, then reached past her and picked up the parchment. Folded it once, tucked it into his pocket. "Then we need a public naming ceremony at the Frosthold gate, under the next moon, with witnesses who carry recording marks." Relief loosened the tightness in her ribs. "You will not argue." "I will argue later, in private, about your security." His voice dropped. "But I will not argue with a mother who knows what she is protecting." Nora leaned into him for a breath. His hand settled at the small of her back--steady, warm, asking for nothing. Hope sneezed. The candle on the window ledge flickered. Nora looked past Darius's shoulder toward the cradle in the corner. The wooden rocker stood still. The blanket lay folded. But the shadow beneath it was moving. Slow. Circular. As if something had crawled under the floorboards and turned in place, waiting for the room to empty. Nora did not scream. She shifted Hope higher on her chest and pointed. Darius turned. His hand went back to the blade. The shadow kept moving. No one stood near the cradle.
