Frosthold became a refuge before anyone approved it. By morning, twenty-seven girls and women from Blackridge debt records had reached the outer gate. By noon, there were forty-three. Some arrived in wagons. Some came on foot. Two carried babies. One carried her dead sister's contract and refused to let go until Nora read the name aloud. The Council called it disorder. Maeve called it Tuesday with paperwork. Darius opened the west barracks. The northern nobles sent objections before sending blankets. Nora read three and threw them into the fire. Venn pretended not to see. "You cannot house every packless woman in the north," he said. Nora signed another temporary protection order. "No. But we can start with the ones at the gate." "Frosthold resources are not infinite." Darius entered behind him. "They are sufficient." Venn rubbed his forehead. "You two are becoming politically inconvenient." "Good," Maeve said from the desk. The packless girls changed the fortress faster than law did. They filled empty rooms with whispers, fear, and stubborn life. Lina organized names. Rose, still silent, sat beside her and stamped each page with a borrowed seal. Maeve trained three older women to copy ledgers. Nora moved between them all until Darius ordered a chair placed in every corridor because she kept forgetting pregnancy was not a rumor. At dusk, one of the women went into early labor. Her name was June Cross. She had walked eight miles in snow because her contract said her unborn child belonged to Blackridge debt. Nora stayed with her. Darius waited outside the room because June feared men in authority. He did not argue. He sat on the floor beside the door for four hours while Nora, Maeve, and a healer coaxed life into a room still afraid of death. The baby was a girl. June sobbed when the child cried. "They said I could not name her." Nora placed the baby in her arms. "Then start there." "Elise," June whispered. "Her name is Elise." Outside the room, the silver root on Nora's wrist warmed. No magic burst. No relic lit. Just a name. Later, Nora found Darius still in the hall, head tipped back against the wall, eyes closed. "You could have gone to bed," she said. "I was guarding the door." "Against what?" "Anyone who thought June's fear was inconvenient." Nora sat beside him because the chair was three steps away and the floor was closer. For a few minutes they listened to the newborn cry inside the room. "Hope," Darius said. Nora looked at him. "The name suits." Her throat tightened. "It felt dangerous to say." "Most true things do." She leaned her head against his shoulder. He went still, then relaxed carefully, as if sudden happiness might frighten her away. The moment lasted until a guard ran down the corridor. "My king. Nora. Iris Bell requests asylum." Nora lifted her head. Maeve opened the birthing room door. "Tell me that is a fever dream." The guard shook his head. "She is at the north gate. Alone. Wounded." Nora stood too quickly. Darius caught her elbow. "She says," the guard continued, "she knows how Seraphine plans to take Hope."
