📖 The Luna He Left in the Snow
Chapter 42: The Mother's Trial
The patron did not enter Frosthold.
She waited below the nursery tower as if the fortress belonged to her and she had no need to knock.
White hair fell to her waist. Her dress was the color of old bone. She looked younger than Seraphine and older than the moon. When guards raised crossbows, their hands began to shake.
Darius stepped onto the balcony with his blade drawn.
Nora followed.
The patron smiled up at her.
"Little ash," she called.
Nora's blood turned cold. That name belonged to her mother.
Darius's blade darkened. "You do not speak to her."
"Still guarding," the patron said. "Good boy."
The insult struck something old in him. Nora felt him go rigid.
"Who are you?" Nora asked.
"The first mother who survived men naming power after themselves."
The words should have carried sorrow. They carried ownership.
Nora gripped the balcony rail. "Then why build a house that cages pregnant women?"
"Because freedom without rule becomes waste."
There it was. Every tyrant eventually dressed hunger as order.
The patron lifted one hand. The silver root on Nora's wrist pulled tight enough to hurt.
Darius reached for it, but Nora shook her head.
The patron said, "Your mother ran from me. His mother hid from me. Mara lied to me. Seraphine bargained with me. You will be smarter."
"I doubt that."
The patron laughed.
The sound split the world.
Frosthold vanished.
Nora stood in a moonlit circle with no walls. Across from her stood three women: her mother Elara, Darius's mother Selene, and Mara the midwife. Not alive. Not ghosts exactly. Memories given shape.
The patron stood between them.
"Trial of mothers," she said. "Choose whose failure you inherit."
Nora looked at Elara.
Her mother held out ash paste in one hand and a knife in the other. "Hide the child and live."
Selene Frost held a black cloak. "Run north and make a king your wall."
Mara held a ledger. "Record everything and die before they burn it."
The offers were not temptations. They were histories.
Nora wanted to take all three and none.
The patron walked around her. "Every mother before you chose fear. Concealment. Flight. Sacrifice. Give me the unborn heir, and I will end the running. The child will rule chains instead of breaking them."
The baby moved hard.
Nora doubled over.
Elara stepped forward, but the patron lifted a hand and froze her in place.
"Choose," the patron said.
Nora looked at the three women who had saved what they could with what they had. Hide. Run. Record.
Then she looked at her own hands.
She had spent months learning that survival was not the same as surrender.
"I inherit all of them," Nora said.
The patron's smile faded.
"I will hide when hiding protects life. I will run when running saves witnesses. I will record what men burn. But I will not hand my child to someone who thinks freedom is waste."
The silver root on her wrist snapped.
Not off.
Open.
It split into three lines, wrapping around her wrist like living law.
Elara smiled through tears.
Selene bowed her head.
Mara winked.
The vision shattered.
Nora collapsed back on the balcony into Darius's arms.
Below, the patron stared at her wrist.
For the first time, she looked angry.
"Then I will come through the father," she said.
Nora looked at Rowan being dragged into the courtyard by invisible force, blood already running from his nose.
