Rowan never reached Nora. Darius caught him by the throat and drove him to the floor so hard the stone cracked beneath his knees. The silver knife skittered away. Frost guards seized Rowan's arms, but Darius did not let go until Nora touched his shoulder. "Alive," she said. His hand tightened once. Then released. Rowan dragged in air like a man pulled from water. He looked at Nora with hatred stripped bare. "You ruined me." Nora stood with one hand over her stomach and the silver seed burning cold in the other. "No. I survived where you hid the bodies." Venn had seen enough. So had the Council. The ruling came before sunset, spoken in the Blackridge ceremony hall with every available witness present. Rowan Vale was suspended from emergency authority. Elder Callum was arrested for ledger fraud, unlawful debt alteration, and conspiracy. Iris Bell's Luna appointment was voided. House Thornveil's debt claims were frozen pending crown-moon review. No one cheered. The room had learned that justice could arrive carrying knives. Rowan was brought forward for the final order. "Until full succession review," Venn said, "Blackridge operations will be managed by a neutral Council steward under Frost military supervision." Rowan laughed. "You would hand my pack to Frost?" Venn looked at Nora. "Not to Frost." The room shifted. Nora went still. "To the senior verified Ashford claimant as civil protector, if she accepts." Rowan stared. Darius turned to Nora, expression unreadable. Nora understood the trap inside the victory. Accepting meant responsibility. Refusing left Blackridge in neutral hands, vulnerable to Thornveil influence. The pack that had watched her humiliation now needed her competence. Old Nora would have called that cruelty and swallowed it. New Nora named it clearly. "I will not be Luna again," she said. Rowan sagged with relief. Nora looked at him. "I will be civil protector until every debt contract tied to this pack is reviewed and every servant threatened for testimony is safe." His relief died. Venn nodded. "Recorded." One by one, the small pack Alphas bowed. Then Blackridge servants. Then guards who had once turned their faces away. Rowan remained standing. Darius looked at him. No growl. No threat. Just winter. Rowan's knees hit the floor. Nora felt nothing like love. That was its own freedom. Seraphine had vanished during the ruling. Her carriage remained. Her attendants did not. Thornveil retreating should have felt like success. Instead, Nora knew better. A woman like Seraphine did not flee. She withdrew to choose a cleaner wound. The warning came after dark. A black thorn was nailed to the nursery door that Iris had prepared for herself months ago. Nora found it with Darius. There was no note. Only the thorn, and beneath it, carved into the wood: The child frees bonds. The child can also break kingdoms. Darius tore the thorn from the door and crushed it in his fist. Nora opened her palm. The silver seed from her mother's vision lay there, glowing faintly. "She will come back," Nora said. "Yes." "Not just for the baby." Darius looked at the seed. Nora closed her fingers around it. "For what my mother left me." Far beyond Blackridge, a horn sounded from the southern road. Not retreat. An answer.
